Information You Need

It's time to begin your predeparture plans for Los Angeles.    Information you need to know!

  Accommodations

Participants in the Semester in Los Angeles Program are provided housing in a gated, extended-stay corporate housing facility, the Oakwood Toluca Hills Corporate Housing, which is located within walking distance from the UTLA Center, where classes are held. All undergraduate students participating in the Semester in Los Angeles program are required to live in The Oakwood – Toluca Hills Corporate Housing. Graduate students are not required to do so. Each apartment is fully-furnished and appointed. Pets are not permitted in the apartments.

Apartment amenities include: kitchen appliances (dishwasher & dining room table); TV, VCR, and telephone; dishes, cookware, utensils, coffee maker, electric blender, toaster, microwave oven, oven mitts & carving board; bed & bath linens, clock radio; dust pan and broom, vacuum, steam iron & board; patio furniture, accessories, silk plants and framed wall pictures. All utilities are included: water, power, trash, basic cable, local telephone service, voice mail & features, individually controlled heating and air-conditioning. Each apartment is provided 4 access codes which allows each student their own internet access.

Students may choose from three housing options at the Oakwood Apartments:

  • Live in a 2-bedroom apartment shared with 3 other roommates.
  • Live in a 1-bedroom apartment shared with 1 roommate.
  • Live by themselves in a studio apartment.

Most students elect to share an apartment with three other roommates. Students will be asked to indicate their housing preference and roommate requests when they apply for admission to the program. While the UTLA Center staff will make every effort to accommodate students’ housing and roommate requests, final decisions will rest on overall student enrollment and housing availability issues. If you have questions, please contact the program coordinator. Requests and changes will be accepted up until the final housing payment deadline for the semester of participation.

Laundry facilities are available on the ground floor of almost every Oakwood building. The machines use a prepaid card system.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the Oakwood apartments.

Other than the complimentary breakfast served every Sunday in Oakwood‘s North Clubhouse, you are responsible for buying groceries and cooking your meals.

Transportation Options

Students are responsible for their own transportation arrangements to and from Los Angeles and during their stay in the city, along with all costs related to their transportation. Public transportation is always an option (information is provided in the UTLA student Handbook) but most students elect to bring their own cars, in order to get to their internship, which may not be accessible to public transportation.

Students who elect to drive their own car to Los Angeles can expect to spend in the range of $1,950.00 for fall and spring semesters and $1,650.00 for summer semesters. Gasoline expenses ($60 per week) are included in those estimates.

Students who elect to fly to Los Angeles and rent a car there, can expect to spend approximately $300 round trip on air fare and $3,300.00 for fall and spring semesters, or $2,400.00 for summer semesters on auto rentals. Auto rental expenses are calculated on a rental rate of $600/month ($2100 in the fall and spring semesters/$1500 in summer semesters), and gasoline expenses of $60.00 per week. Note: Car rental rates currently range from $500.00 to $800.00 per month.   These are estimates only

Bradley University/University of Texas  Car Rental FAQ’s

Enterprise Car Rental

Below you’ll find answers to many of the frequently asked questions for incoming students
(and their parents)

What are the rates?

Enterprise offers a set discounted rate plan for all incoming students staying at the Oakwood properties.  These rates are available year round and include discounts on all vehicle types.  All rates listed do not include taxes or fees, which may vary by location.

How do I make a reservation?

Reservations should be made online via www.enterprise.com.  Simply input the discount code of your school in the Corporate ID field to access the discounted rates and benefits (PIN: OAK).  Please be sure to select the Studio City location located at:

11575 Ventura Blvd

Studio City, CA 91604

What about Insurance?

Please contact your insurance company prior to your rental to determine the limits of your coverage.

Collision Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, Roadside Assistance Coverage and Supplemental liability are offered to all renters over the age of 21 at the time of rental.

For a complete explanation of the costs and benefits of each of these products, visit www.enterprise.com

I’m under 21, can I still rent?

Absolutely, through our arrangement with the Oakwood property and your school, Enterprise does allow students under the age of 21 to rent during their stay.  Some additional information will be required to verify your insurance will transfer to the rental vehicle.  In addition, a $10/day underage fee will be accessed to the rate.

You can make a reservation online at www.enterprise.com (please don’t change the renter’s age online to 18-20 or the system won’t allow you to make the reservation). The discount code is L32W130 and pin is OAK. These rates already include the youthful driver surcharge. You may make a reservation at the Studio City location only. For more information on what is needed; please contact Cheri White at 818-972-2218 or Cheri.White@ehi.com

Can I rent from the Airport?

It is recommended that you pick up your rental car off airport and from the Studio City location.  By doing so, you’ll save over 20% in taxes that Southern California airports charge on car rentals plus additional airport underage fees.  We do not offer a shuttle service from the airport to the Oakwood apartments however; we have included a couple recommendations for Shuttle Companies below.

Primetime Shuttle – www.primetimeshuttle.com

Super Shuttle – www.supershuttle.com

I’ve arrived in LA, now how do I get my rental?

Once you have arrived in LA, you’ll want to get your rental as soon as possible.  You can arrange to take your cab or shuttle directly to our branch or once you are settled you may call for a pickup at the Oakwood property.  Due to the high volume of students typically arriving on the same day, we schedule shuttles from the South Clubhouse throughout the day.  Please call the branch the morning of your reservation to find out when these will occur.

The branch is open from 8am to 6pm Monday – Friday and from 9am to 12 noon on Saturday.  All pickups must take place during these times.

Can I put this on my Parent’s credit card?

All rentals must be placed on a credit or debit card in the renter or student’s name.  A parent or guardian’s card cannot be used unless otherwise authorized.  The charges to the card are placed 1 month at a time in advance of the month.

What do I need to do now that I have the car?

Once you are in your rental, it is vital that you renew/rewrite your contract every 30 days.  Most insurance companies will not cover a rental of more than 30 consecutive days.  In addition, it allows us to inspect the vehicle to ensure proper maintenance.  In order to do so, you simply need to stop in at the location to have the vehicle inspected and new paperwork signed.  You may receive reminder phone calls around your 30th day; however it is the responsibility of the renter to ensure the contract is renewed in a timely fashion.

Can I return to the airport?

All rentals should be returned back to the Ventura Blvd location when you are finished.  If you need to return to either BUR or LAX, there is a $50 one way fee which will be added to your last month’s rental.  Any other airports or other locations are subject to a fee depending on the location.  Should you need to return your vehicle during hours in which the branch is closed, please call the branch before hand to receive instructions on the process.  Please note: the renter is responsible for the condition of the car until the vehicle is collected by an Enterprise agent.

Can students car share?

If a student is under 21, there can be no additional drivers on that rental contract. If a student is over 21, one additional driver may be added on to the contract. One student will be listed as the primary driver and will ultimately be responsible for the vehicle. It is advised that both students verify their insurance coverage prior to the rental.

Transportation from airport to Oakwood Apartments

The FlyAway shuttle. http://www.lawa.org/welcome_lax.aspx?id=292 -- it's essentially a bus that you can take from LAX to Union station (a big transport hub in downtown LA) for $7. It's really hassle free. From Union Station, you can take the red line subway to Universal City. A one-way ticket is $1.50. From there, you can cab it to the Oakwoods for $5-10. It's certainly *not* easy, but it's pretty straightforward.

Highly recommended from LAX to Oakwood is: supershuttle.com.  Super Shuttle is a dependable service.  Your shuttle reservation should be booked in advance of arrival at  ( https://shuttletolax.com/reservations/SELARV).
The cost is approximately $20.00 for a one-way ticket to the Oakwood Apartments with two suitcases.

Taxi service from LAX to the Oakwood Apartments is expensive and a conservative estimate is $45.00 or higher.
