Information You Need

It's time to begin your predeparture plans for Los Angeles.    Information you need to know!

Participants in the Semester in Los Angeles Program are provided housing in a gated, extended-stay corporate housing facility, the Oakwood Toluca Hills Corporate Housing, which is located within walking distance from the UTLA Center, where classes are held. All undergraduate students participating in the Semester in Los Angeles program are required to live in The Oakwood – Toluca Hills Corporate Housing. Graduate students are not required to do so. Each apartment is fully-furnished and appointed. Pets are not permitted in the apartments.

Apartment amenities include: kitchen appliances (dishwasher & dining room table); TV, VCR, and telephone; dishes, cookware, utensils, coffee maker, electric blender, toaster, microwave oven, oven mitts & carving board; bed & bath linens, clock radio; dust pan and broom, vacuum, steam iron & board; patio furniture, accessories, silk plants and framed wall pictures. All utilities are included: water, power, trash, basic cable, local telephone service, voice mail & features, individually controlled heating and air-conditioning. Each apartment is provided 4 access codes which allows each student their own internet access.

Students may choose from three housing options at the Oakwood Apartments:

  • Live in a 2-bedroom apartment shared with 3 other roommates.
  • Live in a 1-bedroom apartment shared with 1 roommate.
  • Live by themselves in a studio apartment.

Most students elect to share an apartment with three other roommates. Students will be asked to indicate their housing preference and roommate requests when they apply for admission to the program. While the UTLA Center staff will make every effort to accommodate students’ housing and roommate requests, final decisions will rest on overall student enrollment and housing availability issues. If you have questions, please contact the program coordinator. Requests and changes will be accepted up until the final housing payment deadline for the semester of participation.

Laundry facilities are available on the ground floor of almost every Oakwood building. The machines use a prepaid card system.

Smoking is not allowed in any of the Oakwood apartments.

Other than the complimentary breakfast served every Sunday in Oakwood‘s North Clubhouse, you are responsible for buying groceries and cooking your meals.

Transportation Options

Students are responsible for their own transportation arrangements to and from Los Angeles and during their stay in the city, along with all costs related to their transportation. Public transportation is always an option (information is provided in the UTLA student Handbook) but most students elect to bring their own cars, in order to get to their internship, which may not be accessible to public transportation.

Students who elect to drive their own car to Los Angeles can expect to spend in the range of $1,950.00 for fall and spring semesters and $1,650.00 for summer semesters. Gasoline expenses ($60 per week) are included in those estimates.

Students who elect to fly to Los Angeles and rent a car there, can expect to spend approximately $300 round trip on air fare and $3,300.00 for fall and spring semesters, or $2,400.00 for summer semesters on auto rentals. Auto rental expenses are calculated on a rental rate of $600/month ($2100 in the fall and spring semesters/$1500 in summer semesters), and gasoline expenses of $60.00 per week. Note: Car rental rates currently range from $500.00 to $800.00 per month.   These are estimates only
