Emergency Prom

Emergency Prom

For one weekend only, from November 10th through 13th, Bradley’s Department of Theatre Arts will perform “Emergency Prom” by Steve Moulds.

Unlike other plays put on by Bradley in the past, this show will prominently feature new actors. Taylor Hernet ’17, Mackenzie Newman ’20, and Zach Daly ’20 are performing in their first Bradley productions.

“I’m a senior and being in a production on Bradley’s main stage was on my ‘senior year bucket list,’” said Hernet, who plays the prom queen, Tiffany. “I’m so glad that I was cast in this production not only to fulfill one of my goals, but I could not have asked for a better cast or creative team!”

Hernet loves that this ensemble piece features more characters than most. “Every single character has a storyline and has something at stake in the show,” she said.

For Newman, who plays Gemma in the show, being able to make connections to her own life has made the show come alive. “Only months ago I was going through the same dilemmas and emotions,” she remarked. “It’s been a blessing to be able to do such a witty and wonderful coming of age show like ‘Emergency Prom.’”

Daly, who portrays high school junior Eric, is excited to be in more plays. “My favorite thing about being in this production is being able to work with new, talented people,” he said.

These newcomers to the Bradley stage are experiencing everything the theatre department has to offer, and they are finding the balance between acting and being students.

While switching from his high school stage to the college stage in challenging in more ways than one, Daly is finding the right balance between school and play practice, utilizing his free time during breaks to finish schoolwork.

“I spend most of my hours in a day in Hartmann Center. Balancing class, homework, my job, and any type of social life with theatre is no easy task,” said Newman. “However, there’s nothing more worth it than being in this department and experiencing these productions.”

Hernet, a Bradley senior, concurred by saying “Even though I’ve been busy, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.”

“Emergency Prom” promises to delight and entertain audiences. “The energy we bring to rehearsal is palpable, and the fun I think the audience will have with us is real,” said Newman.

"Emergency Prom" is set in 1994, a time before texting, Tinder, and Snapchat, and the misfits of Glen Burnie High hated last weekend's prom. What's an unlikely band of outsiders to do? Throw the prom they should have had, a do-over prom, an emergency prom, where Gus and Corey won't break up, where Stephanie and Billy will finally get together, where Patrick might get lucky, Manuel will have the "high school moment" he dreams of, and Melissa will get to dance with the secret love whose silence is breaking her heart. A hilarious, heartfelt look at a group of friends taking destiny into their own hands.

The performance runs for ONE WEEK only:  November 10-13, 2016 in the Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts
