Inspired Physician Leadership, Creating Influence and Impact

By Lindsay Anderson ‘04

As more local physicians enrolled in Bradley’s Executive MBA program, Dr. Charles Stoner recognized the need to compile wisdom for today’s medical leaders. The realization led to the Management and Leadership professor’s latest book, Inspired Physician Leadership, which is co-authored by his son, Jason S. Stoner ’99 MBA ’02.

Most recently, Stoner interacted with various physicians attending a customized leadership development program, through the Executive Development Center, that he taught for the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria.

“There were many internists, cardio and neuro surgeons, emergency room doctors, and more doctors at different levels that either had made or were about to make a move into leadership,” Dr. Stoner remarked. “They were not only going to keep their clinical practice, but also were taking a step into a mix of administrative and managerial objectives in their roles.”

Through a series of anecdotes and analysis, the book shows the journeys of physicians transitioning into leadership roles. It covers tactics to help physicians more easily make the transition from the exam room to leadership.

Foster College of Business faculty and administration are praising the new book from Dr. Stoner.

"The healthcare industry is going through significant changes, where physicians are taking on new leadership roles,” said Dr. Larry Weinzimmer, Caterpillar Inc. Professor of Strategic Management. Dr. Stoner is a prolific writer, having published numerous books.  His new book, Inspired Physician Leadership, is timely, will be in high demand, and will be very impactful for this changing industry.”

This is Stoner’s 12th published book in 34 years at Bradley University.

“It is a pleasure to see our colleague release another managerially relevant book,” said Dr. Jason Garrett, Associate Dean of the Foster College of Business. “This book is full of wisdom regarding 'meaningful decision making and authentic leadership' for the physician community.”

“Another great book from one of our outstanding faculty,” Dean of the Foster College of Business, Dr. Darrell Radson, said.  “We are very proud of Dr. Stoner's new work.  It's a timely and important topic that is superbly addressed by this leadership expert.”
