Actuarial Student Accepts Job at Liberty Mutual

Christie Lin '15, an actuarial science and economics double major from Calgary, Alberta, will head east after graduation to start a job in Liberty Mutual’s actuarial development program in Boston.

“I am very grateful for the support the actuarial program at the Foster College of Business has given me in the exam process, which definitely played a large factor in allowing me to get this opportunity," Lin said.

Lin chose actuarial science because she liked how it combined math and statistics with business, and she found the idea of quantifying risk interesting. She gained valuable experience through several internships, including a summer as a business analyst for K’Prime Technologies and a consulting position with Kenron Pharmacy.

Inside of the classroom, she enjoyed classes such as Dr. William Funkhouser’s Financial Institutions and Markets class and Dr. Aaron Buchko’s Senior Capstone.

“The Foster College of Business has a great program with the Senior Capstone Project that gives a learning experience very unique from any other classes offered to business students in undergraduate studies,” Lin said.

"Christie will make an excellent actuary at Liberty Mutual,” said actuarial science professor Dr. Vince Showers. “Besides being a very strong student in a rigorous discipline, she is very methodical and cares very much about the quality of her work. These are certainly very important characteristics to have for a successful actuarial career.”
