Speech

The speech communication component of general education focuses on the processes of developing a communicatively competent college graduate who attains a high level of knowledge and skill in verbal communication through the systematic study and practice of verbal communication.  Communication competence increasingly depends on understanding of the nature and function of human communication and the relationship between communication and culture, the knowledge of cultural and co-cultural differences and the ability to adapt messages to the demands of diverse audiences. Outcomes include:

  • understand of the nature and function of the human communication process
  • conceptualize, organize, develop, dramatize and deliver an effective public presentation or speech
  • understand the relationship between communication and culture in order to more effectively adapt messages to the demands of diverse audiences and speaking situations
  • refine abilities in critical thinking and writing
