Where Do We Go From Here?

Highly acclaimed civil rights attorney, advocate, legal scholar and New York Times best-selling author Michelle Alexander will speak at Bradley University on February 12, 2015 at 7pm in the Michel Student Center Ballroom delivering a talk entitled, “Colorblind Racism in the American Judicial System.”  Immediately following her speech, a panel discussion addressing the question “Where do we go from here?” will take place.  The panel is comprised of the Honorable James E. Shadid, Chief Judge, United States District Court for the Central Illinois District, Reverend Carole Hoke, President, Peoria Chapter of the National Interfaith Alliance and Dr. Marwin Spiller, Associate Dean of Social Sciences at Illinois Central College.  This event is free and open to the public.

The Sociology Club led by faculty adviser Dr. Darcy Leach has organized this event with the assistance of the following co-sponsors: The Bradley University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Bradley Pre-Law Center, the Black Student Alliance, Students United for Change, the Department of History, the Department of Sociology and Social Work, the Student Activities Budget Review Committee, the Intellectual and Cultural Activities Committee, the Garrett Multicultural Center, the Activities Council at Bradley University and Illinois Central College

Alexander’s book, The New Jim Crow:  Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (The New Press, 2010), has received rave reviews and has been featured nationally on NPR, The Bill Moyers Journal, C-Span Washington Journal and the Tavis Smiley Show, among others.  Michelle Alexander holds a joint appointment at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio  State University.
