Itinerary

We have a preliminary itinerary for our trip.  Check back for updates.

In Fredericksburg, we will focus on four important battle sites in and around the area: the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse.  We do not know the order of the battlefield visits, so we’ll add details as we have them. 

Day 1 – Tuesday, Sept. 3
Depart from Peoria; drive to Columbus, OH with a stop at the National Museum of the U. S. Air Force in Dayton, OH for self-guided tour and lunch.  Continue to Columbus, OH for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2 – Wednesday, Sept. 4
Depart from Columbus, OH; drive to Lancaster, OH for a tour of William Tecumseh Sherman’s birthplace.  Drive to Cumberland, MD for the night with stops along the way.

Day 3 – Thursday, Sept. 5
Depart from Cumberland, MD and drive to Fredericksburg, VA.  Arrive around noon and tour after lunch in Fredericksburg.  We will spend four nights in Fredericksburg at the same hotel.

Day 4 – Friday, Sept. 6
Stay in the area around Fredericksburg and tour two of the four important battlefields with an expert guide. Stay in Fredericksburg.

Day 5 – Saturday, Sept. 7
Guided morning tour; return to hotel around noon.  Free afternoon – on your own or optional battlefield tour with Bernie. Stay in Fredericksburg.

Day 6 – Sunday, Sept. 8
Explore interesting sites around Fredericksburg.  Return to hotel for the night.

Day 7 – Monday, Sept 9
Depart Fredericksburg and drive to Staunton, VA to tour Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum.  Drive to Charleston, WV for the night.

Day 8 – Tuesday, Sept. 10
Travel from Charleston, WV to Harrodsburg, KY.  Tour Perryville Battlefield or visit Shaker Village.  Stay in Louisville, KY one night.

Day 9 – Wednesday, Sept. 11
Tour a Louisville historical home and then travel to Columbus, IN for lunch and a brief step-on tour of Columbus architecture.  Return to Peoria, IL around 6:00 p.m.
