From the Chair
We in the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction (CEC) would like to explore with you the possibility that you might pursue a college career at Bradley University and major in civil engineering or construction management. Bradley is an exceptional private university with remarkable faculty and programs, located in a marvelous and safe city with a supportive community.
Our Global Explorer program provides our students with opportunities to study overseas and experience other cultures. Our department leads the university in terms of the number of students sent abroad each year. We provide financial assistantships to students who can not afford the program. I have made a pledge that any of our student who wishes to participate can. We will guarantee that their cost will not be higher than the cost of taking the same course at Bradley. Our January Interim program in England and Denmark lasts for two weeks with instructions provided by our own faculty. Over the last few years, we expanded our program to include Egypt, France, and Jordan. You can learn more about our program and see pictures of the places our students and faculty get to visit in the Study Abroad section of this web site.
One of the most significant aspects of our department is the uniqueness of the curriculum it offers. We employ the latest concepts in emerging technologies along with microcomputers in most courses, to insure that our graduates are exposed to the latest technological advances in engineering. Our faculty members are well-known both locally and nationally, and are much sought after as speakers at technical meetings. More importantly, they are dedicated professionals with a genuine desire to share their knowledge and experience with students. Unlike what you may find at large public universities, our low student/faculty ratio of 17:1 permits us to provide you with the desired level of personal attention. (It is not uncommon for our faculty to be available for student assistance even on weekends!) The diverse backgrounds of our faculty members, outstanding facilities, and small class size, will help you develop the skills you need to succeed in practice or pursue higher education.
Our programs give you many opportunities to sharpen your skills and to gain valuable practical experience. A civil engineer, environmental engineer, or a constructor is a problem solver, and we train you to be just that- a doer, not a mere theoretician-by getting you involved in community development and improvement, through class projects and the Co-op programs. Over the years, our seniors have been involved in the analysis and design of many practical projects. Our students helped design a recreation facility in southern Indiana involving the construction of two large earth dams, two lakes, and several roads. The professional community places a great deal of trust in our students and faculty-which ultimately translates into more and better job opportunities for you.
I believe the next few decades will be among the most creative, demanding, and rewarding of all times for civil engineers and constructors. Our department has been playing a lead role in getting our future leaders reader for the important tasks that await them. In 2004, we held our first International Construction Innovations Conference (ICIC) here in Peoria. The mission of this conference is to develop a network of business executives, policy makers, and scholars from around the globe, and its objective is to promote business alliances and joint ventures, pursue basic and applied research, align and leverage new partnerships, and help secure new funding sources. ICIC was held again in 2006 with particpants from 34 coutries attending, and another one is now in the planning stage. We also hold an annual Innovations Conference on Asphalt and Transportation (ICAT) that sold out when it attracted more than 350 professionals, educators, and students in 2009.
To help our students get a good start on their careers, we started holding our own job fair in the fall of 2006. We believe that we have the best job fair in the country among any other civil engineering and construction departments that offer one. In 2006 we had more than 60 companies recruting, well beyond the 50 companies target that we had set, and in 2008 we had 75 companies participating. Among the companies that have supported our job fair you will find Turner Construction, Clark Construction Group, Williams Brothers Company, Core Construction, Black & Veatch, Kiewit Western Co., and Geneva Construction company.
