Yates Scholarship

The Gamma-Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society in history, annually awards the Louis A. R. Yates History Scholarship on the basis of merit to an outstanding high school senior who enrolls as a history major at Bradley University. The Yates Scholar will receive an initial monetary award (usually over $1200) and is eligible to work after admission as an undergraduate assistant in the History Department (usually starting in the sophomore year).

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be in their senior year of high school (or equivalent), have completed and submitted admission materials and test results to Bradley University, and indicated a decision to enroll as a history major at Bradley.

Application Materials

  1. Personal Statement—Write a paragraph (300 words maximum) answering one of the following questions: What do you admire about your favorite history book? Why did you decide to major in history? What experience has made the past come alive for you?
  2. Writing Sample—Choose a term paper or class assignment (preferably on a historical topic) that showcases your writing ability.
  3. Letter of Recommendation—Ask a teacher to write a letter of recommendation that addresses the strengths of your academic record and potential.
  4. High School Transcript
  5. Brief CV (Resume)
