Institute Holds Reunion of Alumni
January 16, 2014
The Institute of International Studies held a successful reunion of its alumni October 18 and 19 in conjunction with Bradley's Homecoming. The event commenced with a career workshop on October 18 (see the separate story in "Institute News"). The focus of the reunion was to honor the memory of Institute emeritus professor John R. Howard who passed away in January 2012. On campus, the Institute held an open house exhibiting photos of Dr. Howard as well as many of his publications. The most notable feature of the open house was a poster display of alumni tributes to Dr. Howard. Prior to the reunion, the Institute solicited short narratives from IS alumni in which they offered a special memory of their experiences with Dr. Howard. The narratives were reproduced on large posters that were hung in the exhibit room of the open house..
On the evening of October 19, a banquet was held at Weaver Ridge Country Club that included alumni, IS faculty and staff, and current International Studies majors. The social hour featured an unexpected, but sincerely welcome, visit from President Joanne Glasser. Remarks after dinner were offered by Carl Calkins ('72), John Nyaradi ('72), Tammy Orahood ('95), and Chuck Bukowski ('77). Together the speakers were able to present pictures of Dr. Howard from all stages of his career at Bradley. Many observations were made, but the common thread in all of the remarks was his ability to make people feel welcome and valued. While Dr. Howard mentored hundreds of students and dozens of colleagues actively during his career, he also mentored many more passively; that is, by his example.
