Dr. Dean Cantù, professor and chair of Teacher Education, traveled last summer with 54 American educators to Turkey on the Turkish Cultural Foundation's (TCF) Teacher Study Tour. When they arrived at Istanbul, they were joined by four Turkish teachers and representatives from the TCF.

The study tours are sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF) in cooperation with the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA) and the Peoria Area World Affairs Council, an organization in which Angela Weck from Bradley’s Institute for International Studies serves as the Executive Director. The goal of the TCF and WACA study tour is to further facilitate exchanges between Turkish and American educators.

Dr. Cantù’s two-week study tour began in Istanbul and continued on to Gelibolu (Gallipoli) and Troy, Canakkale, Bursa, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Konya and Catalhoyuk, Cappadocia and Ankara. Throughout the tour, Dr. Cantù and his fellow educators had the opportunity to visit and learn about cultural, archaeological, architectural and natural sites of Turkey, and to meet with experts, educators and representatives of Turkish civil society.

Dr. Cantù benefitted greatly from his experience in Turkey, both personally and professionally, and has integrated what he learned into his social studies education courses and in his research into comparative approaches to social studies education throughout the world.  In addition, Dr. Cantù was able to use the knowledge and connections he gained from this experience to further his role as executive director of the Illinois Council for the Social Studies.

Dr. Cantù chronicled his time in Turkey in a blog, An American in Turkey (available at http://anamericaninturkey.blogspot.com/).  In addition, he created a webpage with photos from his travels in Turkey, which is available on his professional website at http://www.deancantu.com/turkey-study-tour-2013.html.
