Curriculum and instruction graduate program

February 2, 2012

This year saw much modification of the C & I program. Among the modifications is the tailoring of areas of specialization. As part of the degree program, students must take 12 credit hours in one of the three areas: literacy and reading, multidisciplinary, and special education. Other than completing a master’s degree, individuals may select to take a series of courses as graduate students at large. This is especially helpful for obtaining an endorsement as a reading teacher. Since 2008 C & I has had an Illinois approved sequence for literacy and reading that can be taken to obtain the Reading Teacher Endorsement. Twenty-four credit hours are required. In 2011 two teachers completed their coursework for reading teacher. We congratulate Shayne Jesek-Martin, a Manual High School English teacher, and Jennifer Tucker ’97, reading program coordinator of Rankin School District #98, on their completion of coursework and passing the state reading teacher endorsement test.
