Spotlight on a curriculum and instruction graduate
February 2, 2012
Debbie Riggert-Kieffer ’04 MS ’10 is a language arts teacher at Washington Middle School. She graduated with distinction in May 2010, and received honors from the College of Education and Health Sciences at the Academic Achievements Award convocation in May 2011. Her research involved the study of silent sustained reading and its connection to fluency. Although there had been some research regarding SSR, Deb’s research is the first that was done over an entire semester with five classrooms. Because of her findings, Washington Middle School enhanced its reading classes. Deb has been admitted to the English education doctoral program at Illinois State University and is completing her first courses. Her research proposal was accepted for presentation at the annual conference of a premier reading research organization, The Literacy Research Association (formerly NRC). The acceptance rate of proposals is very competitive. Deb truly enjoys teaching sixth grade language arts, and she continues to help her colleagues to expand the SSR component of their reading classes.
