Teacher Education Mission

The mission of Teacher Education at Bradley University is to prepare teachers who will be effective leaders, advocates, and life-long learners.  We believe that teaching and learning are dynamic, interactive, life-long processes based on empowering interactions among learners.

Teacher Preparation Programs

Bradley University offers 18 baccalaureate programs leading to state teacher certification and one graduate-level certification programs in Educational Administration, Special Education, and School Counseling.

Student Characteristics

Most undergraduates (95 percent) are of traditional college age; 95 percent attend full time, and 88.1 percent are Illinois residents.  Fifteen percent of all students are minority students.  The average ACT score for the fall 2009 freshmen was 24.9.  Undergraduate enrollment is 5,061.  Graduate enrollment is 739.  Total enrollment is 5,800.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to Teacher Education Program: Candidates must have earned a minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall, 2.5 in education courses, and a 2.5 in their content major or concentration.  Candidates must have earned grades of not less than a C in COM 103, ENG 101, and a mathematics course that meets university general education requirements.  They must have completed a prescribed group of education courses for each major with the appropriate GPA and no Ds, passed the Illinois Certification Test of Basic Skills, demonstrated appropriate pre-professional behaviors and dispositions, been cleared on a check of criminal history, and received a satisfactory vote of the faculty.

Admission to Student Teaching: Candidates must have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.5 overall, 2.5 in education courses, and a 2.5 in their content major or concentration.  They must have been advanced to candidacy, passed the Illinois Certification Test in their content area, been cleared on the State Police fingerprint check, and have a negative result on a current TB test.

Accreditation

Bradley University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; the College of Education and Health Sciences is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); and all teacher preparation programs are approved by the Illinois State Board of Education.  Individual teacher preparation programs are accredited by one of the following:  National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

Best Practices

• Practicum experiences in the schools begin the freshman year and continue each year of the program, increasing in responsibility.
• Each candidate will have clinical experiences in the full range of his or her certification and in a diverse setting.
• The university has Professional Development School partners at each level from early childhood through high school.

Notable Features and Accomplishments

• The Center for STEM Education Research, Teaching and Learning was unveiled in December and its two new directors, Dr. Mike Risen and Dr. Kelly McConnaughay were introduced.  This center will enhance learning opportunities for our students, our students’ students, and established teachers by promoting innovative ways to teach science, engineering, technology, math, and education.
• Professional Development Schools (PDS) work continued with several college departments involved: dietetics workshops for teachers at Whittier Elementary School, Nursing at Valeska Hinton, Early Childhood Center, and St. Marks School, Physical Therapy at Roosevelt Magnet School and Teacher Education collaboration and field placements continued in all PDS schools. 
• Academic Progress Conferences continued at Manual High School, and all coordinators were involved in supporting student learning and professional development through various activities at their sites.
• An application for Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement with the National PDS organization was submitted.
• Two students from the Peoria Grow Your Own Teachers Program (PGYO) at Bradley presented at a panel at the statewide Grow Your Own Network conference at National Louis University in Chicago in November.
• Seniors Leila Shamsuddin, Katlyn Mueller, and Cassie Belter worked with Dr. Cecile Arquette in November to develop and present “Hands-on Language Arts Activities” at the Illinois Education Association Student Conference in Bloomington, Illinois.
• Bradley’s Delta Sigma Theta Sorority presented a step show about staying in school and being drug free for the students at Peoria’s Trewyn Middle School, where chapter president Monique Jordan conducted her novice teaching.
• Bradley trustees, students, alumni, friends, and local legislators attended a groundbreaking ceremony inside the Markin Family Student Recreation Center for Westlake Hall’s $22 million expansion and renovation in October.
• The Department of Teacher Education and Department of English received national recognition, with conditions, for the English Education program from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  This represents the first time in institutional history that the English education program has received national NCTE recognition.
• For the past 26 years, The Bradley University Institute for Gifted and Talented Youth has offered summer educational opportunities for youth.  In addition to offering summer programming, the Institute offers year-round consulting regarding gifted students.

This is the official catalog for the 2011-2012 academic year. This catalog serves as a contract between a student and Bradley University. Should changes in a program of study become necessary prior to the next academic year every effort will be made to keep students advised of any such changes via the Dean of the College or Chair of the Department concerned, the Registrar's Office, u.Achieve degree audit system, and the Schedule of Classes.
