HISTORY
Since
1983, the Institute for Gifted and Talented Youth and its predecessor,
the Peoria County Foreign Language Immersion Program, have offered
summer educational program opportunities for Central Illinois
youth.
The Institute's summer program, World of Wonder (WOW), features
a broad array of one-week enrichment courses which enable first
through sixth grade students to explore and expand their interests
and abilities in a university environment. Now in its twenty-third
year World of Wonder remains a high quality, thriving program
for area youth.
ELIGIBILITY
All
children entering 1st and 2nd grade in the fall of 2008 are eligible
for World of Wonder. We will determine students' eligibility
for the 3rd-6th grade program based on objective measures and
professional judgment. The selection procedure is intended
to be inclusive, not exclusive, and the guidelines listed below
have been established as an aid for parents and teachers in deciding
if students should apply.
In
determining eligibility, Institute personnel consider these questions:
"Will this student benefit from the classes offered?"
and "Is this student described by the following definition
of gifted and talented children?"
Gifted
and talented children are those children whose mental development
is accelerated beyond the average or who have demonstrated a specific
aptitude or talent. They have demonstrated exceptional ability
in academic subjects, high level thought processes, divergent
thinking, or creativity. Children who are gifted or talented
may display some or all of the following traits: learn easily,
show initiative, enjoy learning, work independently, offer unusual
insights, develop many interests, communicate effectively, or
solve problems creatively.
ELIGIBILITY
GUIDELINES (for students entering 3rd-6th grades)
Students
must fulfill one of the following criteria:
-
Enrollment
in a gifted or talented program within the current academic
year.
-
Achievement

to national norms.
