Nina Collins has served as
chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences since 1982.
She teaches Introductory Food Principles, Investigation
of Food Topics, Consumer Issues in America, and Senior
Seminar in Family and Consumer Sciences. She also supervises
student teachers in family and consumer sciences. Her
current research centers on the history and philosophy of family
and consumer sciences and consumer readability
of HIPAA forms. Dr. Collins has served as mentor
for several undergraduate research projects, including Mildred
Arnold Scholars in the department.
Background
Prior to joining the department, Dr. Collins worked
in food research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Beltsville,
Md. She is the author of recent articles in the Journal
of the Illinois State Historical Society , the Journal
of Family and Consumer Sciences, Journal
of Applied Health and the book, An Industrious and
Useful Life: The History of Home Economics at Bradley University.
In 2002, she developed a Web-based directory of online resources
for high school teachers that appears on the American Association
of Family and Consumer Sciences' Web site: www.aafcs.org.
Collins also serves on the editorial boards of the online journal
for the undergraduate research community and the Journal of
Family and Consumer Sciences.
She has been awarded the Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching
from Bradley University, the Award of Excellence from the Parents'
Association of Bradley University, Student
Organization Advisor of the Year, Academic Advisor of the Year and
the Award for Outstanding Professional Service from the College
of Education and Health Sciences at Bradley.
Degrees & Certification
Dr. Collins received her EdD from Oklahoma State University and
her MS and BS from Southern Illinois University. She is also
certified in family and consumer sciences.
