Scholarships
Students benefit from numerous specialized department scholarships.
Although many of these are awarded to upperclassmen, some
scholarships are awarded to freshmen. These awards vary but
may be up to $1,000 or more per student. <more
Undergraduate
Research
There are many opportunities to work with
faculty on research projects—an experience that provides a “laboratory”
for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills.
For example, three foods, nutrition, and dietetics majors recently
teamed with two engineering majors to study the effectiveness of
various plastic wraps in protecting refrigerated celery for various
lengths of time. This research was presented at Bradley University’s
research expo and at the Illinois Association of Family and Consumer
Sciences’ annual meeting. <more
International
Opportunities
As a major in our department,
you may choose to study fashion merchandising or health care systems
in Europe during the summer - the department periodically offers
such opportunities. Other field study courses have taken
fashion merchandising students to markets in Chicago and New York.

Professional
Work Experience
Every student in the department
takes on a work experience as part of the required curriculum.
Many majors meet this requirement by participating in cooperative
education, which involves working under the guidance of a working
professional in a "real-world" situation. These
experiences give Bradley's family and consumer sciences graduates
a real edge in today's job market - and some of these internship
opportunities actually pay a salary.
Student Organizations
FCS students are involved
in many different organizations: Bradley Hospitality Association,
Dietetics StudentsAssociation (DSA), Bradley University Fashion
Focus, and Kappa Omicron Nu (a national honor society for academically
qualified students). <more |
