Dr. Davison Avilés coordinates the school counseling program
and teaches career development, school counseling, human development,
practicum and internship in counseling, and interpersonal and organizational
behavior. His current research centers on multicultural and social
justice issues in school counseling and career development.
Background
Prior to joining the Department in 1999, Dr. Bob (as he was named
by his students)) taught at George Mason University, where he was
coordinator for the school- and higher education-counseling programs.
He also spent two years at the University of Minnesota, where he
completed his doctoral internship and served as an advisor at the
Chicano/Latino Learning Resource. Dr. Bob consults with educational
institutions in Illinois and across the United States and is president-elect
of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development.
He is the author of articles in The Journal of Counseling and
Development, Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and
Development and Career Planning and Adult Development Journal.
Most recently, Dr. Bob wrote a book chapter, Multicultural
Issues in Assessment, to be included in the upcoming ACA publication,
A Guidebook: Practices in Multicultural Competencies. In
addition Dr. Bob is co-editor of the Illinois Counseling Association
Journal (with Dr. Jobie Skaggs) and serves on the editorial
board of Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development.
Dr. Bob has received local and national awards for his research
and professional contributions, including the American Counseling
Association Research Award (with Dr. Arnold Spokane) and the Illinois
Multicultural Counseling Association Professional Development Award.
Dr. Bob seeks to apply the principles of social justice and multiculturalism
in his personal life and professional activities. He volunteers
in his church and community, working with Latino/a grandparents
who are raising grandchildren, teaching Sunday school, and reading
each week at his neighborhood school. A Bradley University Kemper
professional development site coordinator, Dr. Bob assists Kemper
partner schools develop and implement strategies for school improvement. |
