Francesca Armmer serves as the chairperson of the Department.  In this position she facilitates the operations of the department and assists in the guidance of students and the nurturing of faculty members.  Additionally, she teaches a portion of the theory nursing courses to our sophomore, senior, and graduate students.  Her area of teaching with our graduate students is nursing administration.  Professor Armmer serves as a senator in the University Senate and chairs the Ethnic and Diversity Athletics Committee.  Her research interests include women’s health challenges and health care to minority and underserved populations.

Background
Prior to joining the faculty of the Department of Nursing, Professor Armmer taught for 16 years at Vincennes University.  Throughout her career, she has collaborated with nursing colleagues in Illinois on state-funded research projects exploring health care for underserved populations, as well as parish nursing and perceptions of health among minority populations.  She has also served as president of the Illinois Association of Colleges of Nursing and president of Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Dr. Armmer believes that her teaching style should facilitate student learning styles, the nature of the content, and environmental settings.   Her classes therefore engage in role-playing activities or group critical-inquiry activities or visit appropriate sites.  She also makes sure to nurture various facets of her life that influence her teaching style—so don’t be surprised if you see her in a local bookstore, enjoying a café mocha and a book, or on stage singing with a local musical group, the Heritage Ensemble, or enjoying a leisurely walk.

Degrees & Certification
Dr. Armmer earned her PhD in educational administration from Indiana State University in 1989. She earned a BS in Nursing (1973) from Ball State University and a MS in Nursing (1976) from University of Evansville.
