Dr. Johnson's varied research interests include creating peaceful learning environments and violence prevention, reading strategies, strategies for successful inclusion, impact of environment on learning, and developing cultural sensitivity.  She has co-authored a large number of publications, including “Pathways to Peace: Promoting Non-Violent Learning Environments,” “Changing the Classroom Environment: Meeting the Needs of All Children,” and “Bridging Eastern & Western Philosophies and Models.”

Dr. Johnson has received numerous awards and honors; at Bradley University she has received the College of Education and Health Sciences Service Award, Research Award, and Teaching Excellence Award and was recognized as the Academic Advisor of the Year in 2001.  Dr. Johnson has been listed in five editions of Who's Who in American Education (1993, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005).  She is a past recipient of the Best Presented Paper Award from the American Education Research Association (AERA)-Study of Learning Environments.

Outside the classroom, Dr. Johnson serves a variety of professional organizations.  She is the current President of Phi Delta Kappa, the professional association for educators and serves as Awards Chair of AERA-Study of Learning Environments.  She belongs to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), College Instructors of Reading Professionals (CIRP), International Reading Association (IRA), and National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), among others.

Degrees & Certification

Dr. Johnson earned her degrees at Illinois State University.   She received her BSED in elementary education & mental retardation, her MSED in special education social/emotional disorders, and her Ed.D in special education with a focus on early childhood behavior disorders.  Her doctoral dissertation focused on the effects of interaction training between cocaine exposed infants and their foster mothers.

 

Dr. Celia Johnson is a Professor at Bradley University; she is the Coordinator of Special Education programs and teaches courses in special education, early childhood, and elementary education.
