Jean Marie Grant is an associate professor in teacher education,
focusing on mathematics and technology. She teaches a variety of
courses, including mathematics concepts for teachers; mathematics
methods for the elementary, middle-school, and high-school levels;
development of middle-school youth; and technology applications.
She also teaches graduate courses in technology for educators and
instructional models and designs, directs the comprehensive exams
for our Graduate Curriculum and Instruction Program, and serves
as a University representative for the local Heart of Illinois Teachers
of Mathematics organization. In addition, she serves as a reviewer
for Teaching Children Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching
in the Middle School, and the Mathematics Teacher.
Among Professor Grants research interests is a focus on technology
in the teaching and learning of mathematics. While on sabbatical
during fall 2003, she traveled to Victoria, Australia, to observe
teachers using computers in their classroom. She will present part
of this study at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
annual conference. She is also exploring the development of software
materials to help pre-service teachers learn the concepts of mathematics
that they will be teaching to their future teachers.
She has worked with colleagues on developing materials for classroom
teachers in the area of movement in mathematics, an area that has
inspired a number of projects including a book, Move and Learn
Math Activities, and several presentations.
Professor Grants teaching style is constructivist, helping
her students build upon their prior knowledge to make sense of new
learning. She uses a lot of collaborative work and hands-on activities
to encourage communication and build a community of learners. Throughout
her courses she uses multiple assessments, so that pre-service and
in-service teachers experience varied assessments from a student
viewpoint. She uses technology frequently and strives to bring an
international perspective to her classroom.
