Shari Britners teaching responsibility is in elementary science
methods. She also teaches human development and effective teaching
methods. Dr. Britner serves on several departmental committees as
well as committees involved in preparing for our upcoming NCATE
evaluation.
Her research interests
are in science self-efficacy, and she is currently working on two
projects in that area. She is also interested in the teaching
of evolution in elementary and middle school and in environmental
science education. Dr. Britner serves on the Outstanding Doctoral
Research Award Committee for the National Association for Research
in Science Teaching. She is a reviewer for the National Science
Teachers Associations Recommends and for the Journal
of Elementary School Science.
Dr. Britners teaching style
is dynamic and geared toward helping students appreciate course
material and its usefulness to them in their future careers and
personal lives. Her goal is to help students become lifelong
learners and reflective educators, able to integrate and apply knowledge
from varied sources and experiences.
Degrees & Certification
Dr. Britner received her BA in early childhood and elementary education
from Eckerd College in 1977 and her MEd in middle grades science
education from Georgia State University in 1987. She earned
her PhD in educational studies (with a science education concentration)
from Emory University in 2002. She holds an Early Adolescent
Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards (1994) and an Illinois Master Teaching certificate.
