Program Overview
The Master of Science in Nursing - General major is a three semester program that has been developed to address the need of advanced practice nurses who hold a certificate/diploma of advanced practice, but do not have a master's degree in nursing. Examples of these advanced practice nurses include (but are not limited to) pediatric nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, or clinical nurse specialists. Additionally, the Board of Nursing of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations has identified the Master's Degree in Nursing as the minimum requirement for nursing instructors/faculty members. The MSN - General major students achieve a blend of theoretical, philosophical, and ethical components from foundational to graduate level education. These students enroll in courses with MSN nursing administration and nurse-administered anesthesia majors. The MSN - General major program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
Program Requirements
The MSN - General major has a minimum requirement of 30 semester hours. Students must complete either a thesis (4 semester hours) or directed research (2 semester hours). All students must pass a written comprehensive examiniation prior to graduation. Please see the Graduate Catalog for a detailed explaination of the MSN - General major program requirements.
Estimated Time to Complete the Program
Students carrying full-time course loads can reasonably expect to complete the MSN - General major program in one and on-half to two years. Students carrying part-time course loads have up to a maximum of five years to complete the program.

Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting the admission requirements of the Graduate School, individuals seeking admission to the MSN - General major program should submit official scores for the GRE General Test or the Millers Analogies Test (MAT). Applicants must also submit a resume, three letters of recommendation, and proof of their nursing license and APN certification.
