Still needed---van drivers. The Honors Program needs juniors or seniors to help drive vans to events. Those who drive vans get free admission to the event. You need to be certified by our Facilities Dept---you can call Judi Wood in Macmillan Hall (ext. 2917) to set up a written (way easy) drivers test on M-F at 9, 10, 1, or 2. Once you are certified, you can drive university vans for the Honors Program or other organizations.

Juniors----stop by the Honors Program office to get information about the "Junior/Senior Research Project" required of all students to graduate from the Honors Program. This is not intended to be something you must do in addition to what you do for your major, but rather is intended to ensure that all of our students have an opportunity to learn through active inquiry. We have an explanatory sheet and a form you need to fill out in the Honors Program Office, Bradley Hall 295.

Theater Night----Thursday, Nov. 8. We will meet at 7:15 sharp in the Braves Room (located at the back of the cafeteria in the Student Center) for a dessert buffet followed by Tennessee Williams' "The Night of the Iguana"---one of the most unflinchingly honest, provocative plays in American theater---------probes the turbulent emotional forces at play in human relationships as four people (a defrocked minister, a lustful widow, a free-spirited artist, and an older poet) are thrown together in a desolate Mexican hotel.

Coming: Movie outing to see "Beowulf". The film version of "Beowulf" is due out Friday, Nov. 16. This is the big-budget fantasy film adaptation of the classic epic, starring Robin Wright Penn, Anthony Hopkins, and John Malkovich. We can't plan the exact time until just before the event, but about 5 we will leave from the Heuser Art Center to a local movie theater. You buy your own ticket to the movie (bring your BU ID for discount). After the movie the Honors Program will buy dinner as we talk about the film.

Saturday, Sept. 15:  Opening Night for the Peoria Symphony.  First, two contemporary American works which are already classics and audience favorites; Higdon’s Blue Cathedral has had more performances following its premiere than any other American piece in history. Corigliano’s superb, dramatic score from the movie, The Red Violin, has taken the concert world by storm. Griffes’ White Peacock is a gorgeous, romantic work in the style of the great German romantics who were his teachers. Our celebration concludes with your favorite and ours: West Side Story!.  We will leave from Heuser Art Center at 7:20 for the 8:00 performance.  Tickets for students in the Honors Program are $4.00, $6.00 for a guest.  Reserve in the Honors Program Office, Bradley 295.

Friday, Sept. 21:   Outing to Tanner’s Orchard.  We will leave Heuser Art Center at 3 for the half hour van ride out to Tanners.  You will have time to walk through the orchards---you can pick apples to bring back  [Note:  although the Honors Program will buy everyone your choice of apple pie, cider, fritters, etc. while we are there, but if you want to bring apples home this is at your own expense-------Tanners isn’t cheap.  They are great apples, but cost more than grocery store apples].  We will be back by 6.  Free.  You can sign up a guest.  Reserve at ext. 3283 or stop by the Honors Program Office, Bradley 295.

Thursday, Sept. 27: Dessert Buffet and Theater------for the Bradley musical, “Urinetown.” We will meet in the main floor dining room of the Student Center (the Alumni Dining Room) at 7:10 for a dessert buffet and preview talk on the musical. Then tickets will be provided for the show. Note: we ordinarily go to the opening Thursday, but there were no rooms in the student center, so we moved to the second Thursday. You may sign up one friend. Free. Call ext. 3283 or stop by the Honors Program Office, Bradley 295 to reserve.

Sunday, Sept 30: Outing to Wildlife Prairie State Park.  Join us for an afternoon walking through the 2,000 acres of wildlife with wolves, bison, bobcats, bears, foxes and more all living in their natural habitat.  A true treasure of this area of Illinois---if you haven’t seen Wildlife Prairie Park yet during your time at Bradley, you simply must.  We will leave from Heuser Art Center at 2:15 for a twenty minute van ride to the park.  We will be back by 5:30.  Free.  Bring a friend.  You can learn more about the park at www.wildlifeprairiestatepark.org.  Call ext. 3283 to reserve or stop by Bradley Hall 295.

We are having our “Dessert Buffet and Theater” night on a Friday----Friday, Nov. 17 to see “Angels in America.”  This Pulitzer-Prize winning script is a masterful melding of harsh realism and theatrical fantasy exploring the issues confronting the country as the AIDS epidemic began in the 1980s.  We will meet for the dessert buffet in the Student Center’s Executive Suite (lower level) at 7:15.  The play begins at 8.  Sign up in the Honors Program Office or call ext. 3283---you may bring a friend if you wish.

Evening discussion on graduate school:  Information and advice on taking GREs, scholarship opportunities, selecting and applying to schools, what to expect, careers in college teaching, etc----------Monday, Nov. 13  from 7-8 pm in the Bradley Hall Fourth Floor Conference Room/Lounge.  Call ext. 3283 to reserve, or stop by the Honors Program Office.  Intended for students of all years who are thinking about graduate school for a masters or doctorate (not for medical school, law school, or MBA).

JUNIORS:  The honors program has a requirement that all students complete a research project (in their own majors) as part of their undergraduate experience.  Starting with students who entered Bradley in 2004, we are going to be a little more formal in tracking this aspect of the Honors Program.  We ask that the juniors who have not stopped by the Honors Program Office, please do to pick up 1) a description of the requirement and 2) a one-side of one-page form that lists and describes your research project.

HONORS PROGRAM NEWSLETTER #3

"RENT"-----We still have four tickets to "RENT" for the Wednesday, Nov. 1 show. All tickets are on the main floor. Tickets are being sold to Honors Program students for $40.00. One guest is $42.50. We will provide van transportation from the Heuser Art Center, leaving at 6:50 sharp for the 7:30 performance. You must pay in full when making your reservation in the Honors Program Office, BR. Hall 295. Checks are to be made out to Bradley University Honors Program.

We planned an Evening Discussion on Politics, Women, and Hillary Clinton. The plan was for Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 8-9 pm in the fourth floor conference room of Bradley Hall.
Will Americans vote for a female presidential candidate? Do women tend to emphasize different political issues than men emphasize? What are Americans’ perceptions of Hillary Clinton---how did they arrive at these perceptions.
Come for an hour of refreshments and conversation. We would like all who come to have read a short article that TIME recently wrote about Hillary Clinton---this article is available in the Honors Program office.
Question: Is there interest in this program? I have only heard from one person---if you have interest, contact us at Ext. 3283 or stop by Bradley Hall 295.

Starting with students who entered Bradley in 2004, we are going to be a little more formal in tracking this aspect of the Honors Program. Tuesday, Nov 1, 7:30-8:30 in the fourth floor “conference room” of Bradley Hall

 Graduate School/Careers in College Teaching/Truman and Fulbright Scholarships

Come to an informal session to learn about applying to graduate school (this is for masters and doctorate degrees-----not medical school, law school, MBA, or dentistry) as well as information about careers in college teaching.  We will also distribute information about some post-graduation scholarships.

This evening is designed for seniors, juniors, and sophomores who want to explore the whole process of applying to graduate school, applying for Fulbright and other major scholarships, or who are considering careers in college teaching.

Refreshments will be provided-------as you sign up, Dr. Fuller will try to invite younger professors in the areas you are interested.

Reserve by stopping by Bradley 295 or calling ext. 3283.

Van Drivers?  The Honors Program occasionally needs van drivers for our outings.  You need to be a junior or senior who has been certified by Bradley’s Facilities Office in Macmillan Hall.  Van drivers gets lots of thanks, and their cost of  the event waived.  We will need a driver for a November symphony concert, for example.

Saturday, Nov. 12---Outing to the Peoria Symphony.  We already have an entire seminar attending this event, but we have room for 15 more to attend a program entitled “A Magical Mix” that blends three very different symphonic pieces: Olly Wilson: Expansions III ;Wagner: Siegfried Idyll ; Stravinsky: Petrouchka Ballet Suite.

Tickets are $4.00 for Honors Program students and $8.00 for guests.  We will leave from Heuser Art center at 7:20 for the 8:00 pm performance.

We will leave from the Heuser Art Center at 3:05 for a nearly half-hour van ride out into the country.  You will have time to walk through the orchards, visit the children’s petting zoo, and look through the gift shop.  The Honors Program will pay for light refreshments. 

Note:  Tanner’s charges quite a bit for the apples you pick—you need to pay for this yourself if you choose to buy apples—but you don’t get this opportunity often.

To reserve, call ext. 3283 or sign up in Bradley 295.  We will return to campus about 5:30.

»Friday, September 23:  MOVIE NIGHT

The Honors Program will provide the transportation and dinner – you buy your movie ticket to see “Proof” starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Exact times will be given to those who sign up the day before—but we will try to go to the showing about 5:00, returning about 9:00.  Have your Bradley ID for student discount.

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO BRADLEY HALL CONSTRUCTION, THE HONORS PROGRAM IS IN A TEMPORARY LOCATION IN BRADLEY 118 (Where the Graduate School used to be).

Friday, April 8.   Come downtown to hear some blues and jazz performed by local guitarist/singer Joe Metzga and friends.  We will leave Heuser Art Center at 5:00 pm sharp to travel to the Contemporary Art Center.  Have refreshments.  Listen to music.  Kick off April with some cool music in a way cool setting.  Bring a friend.  Cost is just $2.00 per person which must be paid when making your reservation(s).  We will be back on campus by 7:30.  Sign up in “new”office in Bradley 117B.

Possible Chicago theater trip on Saturday, April 16.  If there is interest, I will put together a bus trip to Chicago on Saturday, April 16.  Leave Bradley about 10:30 am.  Go straight to downtown Chicago where you are on your own until 5 pm.  Go to museums, art galleries, shop, whatever.  At 5 pm we will go out to Naperville and somewhere in between find a place to eat.  At 8 is a performance of “Leaving Iowa”---a play with music written and directed by two Bradley alums and stand-up comics (Tim Clue and Spike Manton). The play is about children gathering to bury their father in Iowa and remembering whacky family trips through the Midwest in a family station wagon----music, comedy.

Cost would be about $25 plus the cost of your own lunch and dinner.  (heck, it costs more than that to drive to Chicago).

Honors Program pays everything above this, including charter coach costs.  Arrive back about 1 am.  Non-honors program students very welcome

Coming on Thursday, April 14: Bradley play, “Translations.” Meet in student center at 7:15 for dessert buffet, then the performance of Translations by Brian Friel.

A powerful and haunting play by Ireland’s greatest living writer, Translations is about nothing less than language as the soul of a nation. Set in 1833 in Ireland, the play tells of the British army’s campaign to replace the native Gaelic with English, an attempt to end centuries of fighting by setting up a political union based on a common language. Against this backdrop of political unrest, a pair of star-crossed lovers, a British soldier and a young Irish woman, struggle to overcome the barriers of their different languages and cultures to express their affection for one another. Through Friel’s fertile and poetic imagination, tragedy is transformed into up-lifting triumph as communication overcomes political conflict.------We will send out an announcement for this again in a week, so need to sign up now (though you can at ext. 3283).  No cost.  Bring a friend.

We will start taking registration for Honors Program classes and seminars on Monday, April 4th for current Seniors and Juniors who will be Seniors at the end of this semester (according to semester hours earned).  Wednesday, April 6th, all Juniors and Sophomores who will be Juniors at the end of this semester can register.  Monday, April 11th, all Sophomores and Freshmen who will be Sophomores at the end of this semester can register.  I have attached a list of Honors Program classes and seminars that will be available to register for in our office.  All Honors classes and seminars are on reserve and must be registered for in person to sign up for the class.  Honors classes are designated by the section numbers that start with a 4 (40, 41, 42, etc.)  All other classes can be registered in Webster.  You can also pick up a paper copy of this list in our office. Just stop by and ask for one.  If you have any questions about the registration, please don’t hesitate to call or stop by.

COOL PEORIA:
  Friday, October 29th, we will take a small group down to Peoria's Contemporary Art Center to hear local artist/musician Preston Jackson's group play jazz and blues.  We will leave Heuser Art Center at 4:50, return about 7:30.  As one senior put it, "Going to one of these Five Spot Jazz nights totally opened my eyes to what Peoria has to offer if you look."  Cool music.  Cool people.  Light refreshments provided.  Free.  You must reserve in Bradley 140; call ext. 3283; or email Debbie.
 

JUNIORS & SOPHOMORES:
  Think Ahead!  In your Senior year, you might want to apply for a prestigious scholarship to study abroad (Fulbright), study in England (Rhoades), study government/politics (Truman), study humanities (Mellon), etc.  These are very competitive scholarships.  A fairly high GPA and evidence of some student activities/leadership are critical.  Many of our students have gotten Fulbrights and some could get the others if we could get more to apply.  Contact Dr. Fuller if you want to know more.
