Craig Cady is an assistant professor in the Biology department at Bradley University.  He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Wisconsin and Ph.D. at the University of Arizona.  Dr. Cady’s research and teaching emphasis is in neurophysiology. He comes to Bradley after completing an NIH fellowship in the Neurology department at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.  During his fellowship at SIU, Dr. Cady’s research focused on the effects of aging on the brain as related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.  He has published papers on age-related changes in neuron function, methods of extending neuron survival and on how estrogen can protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases.  Dr. Cady is currently involved in several stem cell research projects.  His major interest is in developing methods to alter stems cells to function as neurons as a possible means of replacing neurons damaged during stroke or neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.  Dr. Cady currently collaborating on a research project exploring the use of stem cells in replacing damaged heart tissue following the effects of heart disease.  This year Dr. Cady has been investigating the potential of using stem cells in treating ovarian cancer and has recently published a paper on this important topic.
