Student Organizations

The CS/IS department presently has three active student organizations.

CapstoneAssociation of Computing Machinery (ACM) Student Chapter
In Spring 2005, a local student chapter of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) was reestablished. The goal of this organization is to expand and enhance the educational opportunities available to technology minded students.

Members discuss topics not normally covered in the classroom in a relaxed, open forum. Some presentations and demonstrations include a hands-on demonstration of Linux, using a router, the installation of a car based PC, a virtual tour of the Computer History Museum in San Jose, CA, and basic 3D programming using OpenGL. The group has extended an open invitation for any alumni or other professionals working directly in the computing industry or related fields to speak to the group. Faculty advisor is Dr. Arnold Patton.

Bradley Evolving Algorithms Research (BEAR) Organization
BEAR is an invitation-only student research organization overseen by Dr. Arnold Patton. This group has been active for several years. Students and faculty work together to develop a project and then implement it. In recent years BEAR has installed a Beowolf cluster in the Department for use by BEAR and Bradley faculty. For more information, contact Dr. Patton.

Women in Technology (WiT)
WiT's mission is to pursue educational opportunities outside the classroom and to educate others through various outreach endeavors that promote and encourage women interested in technology. WiT is open to both men and women. WiT meets biweekly to learn about the latest technology and plan community outreach. Past presentations include information on careers, a demonstration of Linux, and a hands-on demonstration on assembling computers given by Retro Tek Executive Director (and BU alumn) Michael Hodge.

WiT is presently composed of CS, CIS, BCS, Multimedia, and Graphic Design majors, CS minors, prospective majors and minors, and hobbyists!

WiT is seeking guest speakers for future meetings and mentors for our members. Anyone interested in sharing their time and talents with WiT should contact Meredith Cler, President at mcler@bradley.edu
