The Vincent of Beauvais Newsletter (VBN) was first published in 1976 in the History Department of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois 61625, USA. Full of enthusiasm after spending two months at a summer institute on Latin palaeography (directed by Dr. Leonard Boyle at Duke University) working on the manuscript tradition of the Speculum historiale, the editor decided to share some of his newly acquired information concerning Vincent studies with a few interested fellow scholars. The first brief issue, not even properly numbered and dated, was mailed out to about 25 others known to be directly or indirectly interested in Vincent and his numerous works. The early readers responded with news of their research activities and publications, with prior and/or upcoming papers delivered or heard, and with the names of other scholars interested in Vincent. From this beginning, the undertaking grew; volume XXX (2006) of the VBN was sent to about 250 scholars currently on its mailing list. The VBN appeared on the scene when a new group of scholars in both North America and Europe (L'Atelier Vincent de Beauvais group the University of Nancy II  also emerged at this time in France) began to do serious research on Vincent and his voluminous writings. Due to ongoing mutual cooperation, all Vincent scholarship has prospered as the VBN emerged as the medium to share research knowledge for all those involved in the study of Vincent.

The primary purpose of the VBN is to keep scholars involved in research on Vincent in contact with each other in order to prevent duplication of effort and to put those working on related topics into contact with each other for mutual aid and support. The VBN communicates the latest studies and developments to all others in the field of Vincent research, as it announces papers read, articles and books published, research-in-progress, and the names and addresses of fellow scholars and their research interests as well. The volumes also contain one or two Feature Articles in each issue. The first book review appeared in 1981; all major books dealing with Vincent have been reviewed in depth in the VBN since then. Major research libraries and archives in both Europe and North America are on the mailing list, and there are many international scholars among its recipients and contributors.

The internationally distributed VBN is still edited and produced by its founding editor who continues to locate (with the help of his vast and generous readers) and assemble most of the material for this 15-18 page annual publication. It is still distributed free, with the cost of publication and mailing underwritten by the History Department and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences of Bradley University. Copies of most back issues are still available on request. Those who wish to be placed on the mailing list, should contact the Editor at the address mentioned above.

All scholars interested in any and all aspects of Vincent research are encouraged to keep the Editor informed of any Vincent papers, articles, and books that they read and/or write (and any others of which they learn) so that the VBN can continue to facilitate ongoing communication and cooperation between all scholarly activity concerning Vincent of Beauvais.
