RE: Proposed Additions to Senate Constitution
The Contractual Arrangements Committee brings to you proposed changes in the Faculty Handbook. The primary objectives are (1) to clarify existing policy on who qualifies for tuition remission by adding the definition of dependent, and (2) to add a minimum number of years of service for participation in the Tuition Exchange Program.
In the committee's examination of university policy on tuition remission, it was evident that the existing handbook language was incomplete and not adequately communicating the existing policy. The committee suggested to Mr. Pardieck and Vice-President Anna that revisions were needed. Several drafts were exchanged in a joint effort to craft language which expressed existing policy without creating unintended effects.
The proposed language does not change the definition of dependent being used, but simply includes it in the handbook.
The proposed language on tuition remission does makes one change in existing policy. A deceased employee no longer has to have completed three full years of service before his/her dependents qualified for tuition remission.
The change on the Tuition Exchange Program is to add an unambiguous minimum of five years of full-time service as a requirement for participation in the program.
