Foster College of Business Administration
Course Modification
BUS 220, Career Planning Strategies, 1 s.h.
Course description: Prepares students for internship positions and employment after graduation; research career opportunities in business; and develop a systematic approach to employment planning. Pass/Fail. Credit will not be given for both BUS 220 and ELH 301.
Semester Hours: no change
Prerequisities: Business Major
Rationale: A change in numbering from 300 level to 200 level allows sophomores to take this career development course. This is desirable because many business students participate in internships or practica before the junior year, and having the course before that time would facilitate their ability to compete successfully for the opportunity to have such experiences.
Course Addition

Prerequisites: MTG 315
Rationale: This course would be the first in the Marketing Department to deal exclusively with the management of advertising and the use of advertising for strategic advantage.
Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts
Course Modification
ART 316, Independent Study in Studio Arts, 1-3 s.h.
Course description: Independent study in studio arts. Repeatable for a total of 6 hours of credit.
Semester Hours: no change
Prerequisities: no change
Rationale: The independent study course sequence (ART 316, 416) is being modified to create a separate sequence in Art History (ART 317, 417). Creation of the new sequence in Art History thus modified the major, and the Department requests the change accordingly.
ART 416, Independent Study in Studio Arts, 1-6 s.h.
Course description: Independent study in studio arts. May be repeatable in more than one area of art, for a total of 6 hours of credit.
Ensembles, (changes in course numbers)
Applied Music (changes in course numbers)
Music course and program proposals provide numbers for music ensembles and applied music instruction that will be consistent with the university course numbering system and recognizable by computer audits.
Currently, music ensembles are each offered in two courses at the freshman or sophomore level, and applied music instruction is offered through unnumbered courses. These proposals simplify ensemble numbering and differentiate between freshman/sophomore and junior/senior course numbers so that the computer system (DARS) will recognize the level of courses. Approval for the junior/senior courses requires junior standing and a successful performance examination.
Numbering courses requires program modification to reflect changes.
Rationale: The addition of course numbers to the applied music courses and the changes in course numbering for the ensemble courses will be consistent with university course numbering and will be recognizable by our computer audits. The proposal also creates junior level courses in the music ensemble sequence.
Major/Graduate Program Modification
Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in Art History (elective portion only)
Electives in art history are to be chosen from the following: Art 240, 250, 260, 270, 350, 360, 380, 390, 317, 417, 470.
Rationale: The independent study course sequence (ART 316, 416) is being modified to create a separate sequence in Art History (ART 317, 417). Creation of the new sequence in Art History thus modifies the major, and the Department requests the change accordingly.

Major and Minor Modification
Physics Major and Minor Modification
During the course of this academic year, we passed a number of changes to courses in physics. These changes were made in anticipation of changes in the major and minor in physics, but the program changes awaited a clear explanation of the current and the proposed programs. That explanation is now before us. The table included with this memo outlines a comparison of the current and the proposed majors and minor in physics. In general, the major and minor have become more flexible in the courses from which students may select in order to fulfill the requirements of the major. The subcommittee commends the Physics Department for its efforts in clarifying the requirements of the major and minor.
Course Modification
SW 260, Research Methods, 3 s.h.
Course description: Social research methods: research design and models of observation, including single subject and program evaluation, quantitative and qualitative methods, sampling techniques, questionnaire construction, types of surveys, measurement problems, and data analysis.
Semester Hours: no change
Prerequisities: no change
Rationale: The social work research methods course is currently numbered as SW 240, a number that is lower than that for the "entry level" course in social work (SW 250). This conceptual anomaly would be eliminated by renumbering the research methods course to SW 260, a change suggested in the accreditation review of the social work program.
Course Addition
These courses were subsequently submitted to the General Education Committee.

Semester Hours: 3 s.h.
Rationale: This course will expand the range of courses from which students may satisfy the general education requirement in western civilization. The course will allow for more depth of content coverage than is possible in CIV 100, while still meeting the requirement in this category.
