BRADLEY UNIVERSITY SENATE 1999 - 2000 SESSION

MINUTES

FOURTH REGULAR MEETING, DECEMBER 8, 1999

  1. CALL TO ORDER
  2. The meeting was called to order at 3:15 P.M. in Ballroom C of the Student Center.

  3. ANNOUNCEMENTS
    1. Agenda items for February 17 University Senate meeting are due to Kurt Field by February 7, 2000.
    2. The March University Senate Meeting will be in the Marty Theater, not Ballroom C.
    3. The role of the Faculty Ombudsman in Faculty Grievance and in Tenure, Promotion and Dismissal has been drafted by AAUP. The draft is being forwarded to each of the Committees for their review and recommendations. The Senate will vote on approval following open meetings with faculty and discussions by the Dean's Council.
  1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
  2. Alan Galsky moved approval of the minutes. Fred Tayyari seconded the motion. The minutes were approved.

  3. CALL FOR ITEMS TO BE ADDED TO THE AGENDA
  4. No items were added to the agenda.

  5. REPORTS FROM ADMINISTRATORS
    1. Interim President Anna stated that when he announced the Burgess Award at the last meeting and identified who had won previous University award winners, he failed to state that the Bartlett award winners included the Department of Business Management and Administration, in addition to the Center for Student Leadership and Public Services, now the Burger Center for Student Leadership and Public Services.
    2. Travel and entertainment policies are being refined. After the beginning of the second semester a draft policy will be presented to the Contractual Arrangements Committee for their review and recommendations to Administration.

      Interim President Anna indicated that no challenges are expected with regard to the University's preparation to meeting Y2K capabilities.

    3. Provost Liberty announced the Central Illinois Higher Education Consortium, which is headquartered at Bradley, will have a continuing education program January 12 - 14 presented by Pacific Crest entitled Process Education. The program will be held in the Alumni Dining Room. There will be room for about 20 Bradley University faculty. Those interested are to call Tom Campbell.
    4. He announced that the position held by Ann Sterner had has become a full-time position. The search to fill the position has been completed. Mr. James Casey from Northwestern University, with six years of experience in sponsored programs, will be joining the Bradley campus in April. Mr. Casey has two master's degrees from Marquette: International Education and Public Administration and a JD degree from the University of Dayton.

    5. Robert Viets gave a Presidential Search update. The Committee is accepting all new recommendations and applications through the holidays. No decisions will be made until after faculty are due back on campus. He shared the importance of not breaching the confidentiality of the search and identified eight steps in the search process. He thanked the faculty at Bradley for not having breached the confidentiality of the search. Several persons have had contact with persons who have been invited to campus.
  1. REPORTS FROM STANDING COMMITTEES
  2. The senators were directed to pages 8 and 9 for the report from the Contractual Arrangements Committee. The report included results of the 1999 Retirement Plan Survey.

  4. There was no old business.

  5. NEW BUSINESS
  6. There was no new business.

  7. OTHER BUSINESS
  8. Student Senator, Brian Weidner, reported on the activities of the Student Senate. Their actions have resulted in setting such safety resolutions as 17 new emergency telephones; safety gates for the windows of the singles apartments; and a bicycle patrol unit for the Bradley police.

    The goals of the Student senate relate to food service, technology, safety, recycling, and improvements to the advancement of recreational facilities.

    Mr. Weidner thanked the faculty for assistance with the many forums. He indicated that their support really means a lot to the Student Senate and the University as a whole.
