The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Retail Merchandising. Students are required to complete a minor in either Marketing or Business Management. The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates for careers in buying, sales, and related areas in the fashion industry. The Retail Merchandising curriculum includes core courses in the history and philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences along with specialized courses in Retail Merchandising. These areas include:

  • apparel analysis
  • consumer behavior
  • fashion merchandising
  • textiles

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers both a local and global focus, empowering graduates to respond to diverse and complex family and consumer issues.

Scholarships
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences chooses two freshmen each year to become either the “Mildred Arnold Scholar” or the “C.C. Wheeler Scholar” with an accompanying annual scholarship of $4,000. These scholarships are renewed annually for up to four years providing the student maintains a minimum GPA of 3.00 and completes the scholarship requirements. Only students who have applied to Bradley University’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences by February 1 each year and have completed the scholarship application will receive full consideration for these prestigious awards.

Opportunities at Bradley
Students enjoy close interaction with faculty and the opportunity to gain experience through relevant research projects and even participate in annual student research and creative achievement exhibition. Outside of the classroom, Bradley Family and Consumer Sciences Retail Merchandising majors enjoy many cocurricular and cooperative learning experiences including:

  • An off-site study in Europe, Chicago, and New York
  • Bradley University Fashion Focus organization
  • Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society
  • Bradley Hospitality Association

Beyond Bradley
Bradley Retail Merchandising graduates enjoy an excellent placement rate of up to 100%. Bradley alumni have held or currently hold significant positions nationally such as:

  • Interior Stylist in the Visual Merchandising/Display Department of Nordstrom
  • Merchandise Manager for a resort at Disney
  • Planning Manager for Crate and Barrel Corporate Headquarters
  • District Manager for Hertz
  • Business Analyst for Marshall Fields
  • Children’s Buyer for Von Maur

Graduates have continued their studies in programs at:
