The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Chemistry offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates for careers in such areas as industrial research, consultation, technical and pharmaceutical sales and chemical production management, as well as for graduate school. The program is built upon a solid core of Chemistry, with additional science courses that provide the special knowledge needed to prepare for a career in biochemistry. The department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society for the professional education of chemists since 1948, when accreditation began.

Within a given program, each student has the opportunity to individualize an actual program of study to meet specific career goals. Students in Bradley’s Chemistry program work directly with faculty who regularly publish books, conduct scholarly research, and receive funded grants to enhance their focus on scholarly teaching. Some of the specialized interests of Bradley’s Biochemistry faculty include:

  • lipid metabolism
  • fatty acid structure/function
  • macromolecular interactions in antigen presentation
  • spectroscopy and the chemical effects of ultrasound

Opportunities at Bradley
Outside of the classroom, Bradley Biochemistry majors have a wealth of cocurricular and cooperative learning experiences from which to choose, including:

  • undergraduate research
  • an industrial cooperative education assignment
  • assisting in the laboratory
  • Chemistry Club

These experiences prepare Bradley biochemistry majors well for either immediate employment upon graduation, or for further study at the graduate or professional level.

In addition, the department developed two programs which offer students opportunities to travel and study abroad. The European Summer Semester involves four two-week periods in the following locations:

  • London
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Austria

The Junior Year of Chemistry Abroad program allows students to study chemistry at University of Hull in England, a world famous institution known for its pioneer research in liquid crystals

Beyond Bradley
Bradley Biochemistry graduates enjoy a 100 percent placement rate. All of our graduates who have applied to graduate schools are admitted with either a graduate assistantship or a fellowship. Biochemistry graduates have pursued Ph.D. studies at various universities including:

  • Washington University
  • Duke University
  • Harvard University
  • MIT
  • Princeton University
