AN ACCIDENTAL DISCOVERY
Discovering Bradley was an accident. In my junior year I began my college search, and I was looking to get as far away from home as possible. I used Princeton Review to narrow down my searches, and Bradley University kept coming up in my searches. Although it wasn’t as far away as possible, I finally gave in and decided to take a closer look. I convinced my parents that we needed to drive down to Illinois to check out Bradley and the retail-merchandising program. After just a few minutes on campus, I knew this was where I belonged.
I am the only girl in my family and with two brothers, I always begged my parents for a sister. When I came to Bradley, I thought it might be time to finally have some sisters, so I joined a sorority my freshman year. This has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to expand my involvement at Bradley. I have participated in philanthropic activities for the past three years. My sorority has also helped me to maintain my GPA through mentor programs and study hours. Overall, my sorority has been my home away from home.
One of the greatest experiences I’ve had was taking a January Term class in London. I went over with Bradley faculty and students expecting to have a good time, but the trip really changed my life. I fell in love with the city of London and everything it had to offer. While I was there I saw eight plays and took a weekend trip to Paris. As the two and a half weeks flew by, I realized that I didn't want to leave. As soon as I returned to Bradley's campus, I went to see my academic advisor and we began a plan for me to study abroad for a semester. I have made plans to go to American Intercontinental University in London for the fall semester of 2010. I will be taking fashion classes and doing a fashion internship, and I could not be more excited! Part of the Bradley experience includes studying off campus. I’ve studied in London and New York. The close relationship Bradley has with Universities all over the world makes it possible for students to study all over the world.
CLASSES ARE A DREAM
Taking classes at Bradley has been a dream come true. The class sizes here are smaller than my classrooms from high school! The small classes allow your professors to get to know you not just academically, but personally. Professors engage their students with discussion and activities rather than lectures.
Currently, I am working on a collaborative project between Retail Merchandising and Dietetics majors. I’ve been working on a project for children with Diabetes who have to wear pump packs or carry emergency kits with them at all times. Our team has been in contact with the children and parents to customize the product to meet each child’s personal wants and needs. While working with the children, I’ve gained insight and hands-on experience working with the actual supplies that will go into the packs and garments. The focus of this year’s project was to broaden our product range from simple pump packs to garments and back packs to meet the children’s active lifestyles. At the end of the project, we did a fashion show with the children wearing their new garments or packs.
A GLAMOROUS SUMMER
I’ve had lots of great experiences since I’ve been at Bradley, but this year will be hard to beat. I’ll be heading to New York this summer for an internship with Glamour Magazine.” Goodbye Minnesota and hello New York! I will be living in student housing a half mile from Times Square in Manhattan from the end of May until mid-August. I will be working in the accessories department with two other interns. I am looking forward to having the opportunity to assist with pulling accessory looks for the magazine. I have admired Glamour's fashion spreads for years, and I still cannot believe that I will have the opportunity to be a part this magazine! As an intern I'm sure that I will be running all over New York picking up samples for photo shoots. New York is the fashion capital of the United States, and I'm so excited for the opportunity not only to move there, but also to work for such a well-respected company in the industry.
