Bradley's Department of Music offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Music with a Concentration in Instrumental, Organ, Piano, or Vocal Performance. Music at Bradley combines technology and tradition to prepare students for careers as teachers, composers, performers, or executives in the music industry.
The music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
Students in Bradley's Music Performance program work directly with faculty. To assist students and help them achieve their goals, there are 11 full-time and 18 part-time faculty and staff in the department. In addition, faculty members bring nationally recognized leaders in the industry to share their experiences and offer assistance to students on a regular basis.
Outside of the classroom, Bradley Music Performance majors have a wealth of cocurricular and cooperative learning experiences from which to choose, including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (the professional men's music fraternity), Sigma Alpha Iota (the professional women's music fraternity) and The National Association for Music Education (MENC).
Bradley offers a number of different ensembles for both music and non-music majors alike. These include: University Chorale, Madrigal Singers, Women's Choir, Community Chorus, Opera Workshop, Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band, Basketball Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab Band, Chamber Orchestra, Peoria Symphony, and the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. Auditions for these ensembles are held at the start of each semester.
In addition to the core requirements for all Music majors, which includes Applied Lessons, Ensembles, Theory, Sight-singing, Ear-training and Music History courses, Vocal Performance students participate in additional Applied Lessons, Foreign Language Diction, two Opera Workshops, Vocal Literature, Foreign language courses in French and German, and a half-recital to be performed in the student’s Junior year.
Students interested in majoring in Music must successfully complete a music audition after being admitted to the University. There are three parts to the music audition process at Bradley: Performing (8 to 15 minutes), Interview (15 to 20 minutes) and Basic Theory Exam (30 minutes).
