The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a baccalaureate program in mechanical engineering accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The program prepares students for graduate school or immediate success as practicing engineers in industry.  The Mechanical Engineering curriculum integrates design experiences into all levels of the program and into a majority of the professional courses. This culminates in a required comprehensive design experience which is satisfied by a year-long senior project mostly with industry sponsors.  Nationally recognized for its superior programs, U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Bradley’s engineering programs among the top 30 undergraduate engineering programs in the Nation.

Curriculum
The program focuses on innovation, design and problem solving in such varied areas as controls, engines, energy management, fluid flow, gas dynamics, instrumentation, machine design, materials science, propulsion systems, robotics, and thermodynamics and thermal systems.  The required and elective course sequence culminates in a two semester senior project.  Some recent projects include:

  • Actuator for Ankle Orthotic
  • Formula Car for Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Competition
  • Hydraulic Tank for an Off-Highway Truck
  • Radiant Heater for Large Spaces

Bradley’s Mechanical Engineering curriculum is supported by a high-tech campus with state-of-the-art laboratory and computer facilities that utilize the latest in hardware and software technologies.  Laboratories include:

  • Burkes Design Center
  • Fluid Mechanics Lab
  • SAE Lab
  • Instrumentation and Microprocessors Lab
  • Materials Testing and Modeling Lab
  • PC Lab
  • Projects (Engines) Lab
  • Robotics Lab
  • Thermal (Heat Transfer) Lab
  • Sun Workstation Lab

Beyond Bradley
Mechanical engineering is the broadest and most versatile of the engineering professions. In addition, engineering at Bradley prepares students for many other professions, with current alumni of the program holding various positions including:

  • patent attorneys
  • surgeons
  • chief executives

Bradley's Mechanical Engineering graduates enjoy a consistently strong job outlook, with corresponding placement rates and starting salaries.  Recent employers include:

  • Boeing Company
  • Caterpillar Inc.
  • Accenture
  • Komatsu North America
  • BUTLER International
