About Lectures

Lectures brings various types of speakers to campus who speak on a variety of topics, from politics, social issues, and the environment, to dating and kissing. Want to help decide what lectures come to campus? Or do you have a topic that you'd like to see someone speak about here? Rick Shenkman // Election 2008: How Will You Decide?

Thursday, September 25 // 8pm

Neumiller Lecture Hall // FREE

By the end of the presidential election you will know whether the candidates wear boxers or briefs, who they've slept with and the name of their dog or cat. You'll know if they ever smoked dope, dodged the draft or were stupid enough - like Gary Hart in 1988 - to allow their picture to be taken while sitting on the lap of a half-naked woman aboard a boat called the 'Monkey Business.' But how do you know what to believe? How do you figure out when you're being manipulated, lied to or misled by either the media, the candidates or both?

Separating the wheat from the chaff of political news takes an expert. Join TV pundit Rick Shenkman on a romp through American politics and you'll never be a victim of political bull again.

Richard Shenkman is the editor and founder of George Mason University's History News Network, a website that features articles by historians on current events. An associate professor of history at George Mason University, he can regularly be seen on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. He also appeared on the Daily Show and wrote the book "Just How Stupid Are We? Facing the Truth About the American Voter". He is a New York Times best-selling author who was educated at Vassar and Harvard, Mr. Shenkman is an award-winning investigative reporter and the former managing editor of KIRO-TV, the CBS affiliate in Seattle. In 1997 he was the host, writer and producer of a prime time series for The Learning Channel inspired by his books on myths. He gives lectures at colleges around the country on several topics, including American myths and presidential politics.
