The Bradley Student Council for Exceptional Children (BSCEC), sponsored by the Department of Teacher Education, is composed of a diverse group of people who have a common goal: to work for the betterment of the lives of persons who are learning disabled, blind, deaf, mentally handicapped, gifted, experiencing emotional or behavioral problems, physically handicapped, or for some other reason have been classified as "exceptional." This organization is a student center of the major international professional organization in special education, which is the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Bradley students majoring in such fields as education, psychology, nursing, biology, and counseling are members. Through heloing others, the student members gain experience in working with children and adults; broaden their scope of understanding; establish contacts for future reference once they are working in their chosen field; and experience the camaraderie that is so characteristic of the organization.
The organization has sponsored a range of activities over the years such as ice cream socials, Halloween parties, and other holiday celebrations for exceptional children and youth. Other activities include annual participation in events such as Special Olympics Bowling, Track and Field; Exceptional Awareness Seminars for students and community members. We sponsor fundraisers, and use those funds to help area exceptional children. We also have many guest speakers on issues relevant to students such as Child Abuse, Behavior Management, and Job Placement.
BSCEC has many exciting plans for the 96-97 school year. We plan to attend the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children Fall Convention in Arlington Heights November 7-9th. There will also be an opportunity to attend the CEC International Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah next April! This is just an example of the many apsects of the Bradley Student Council for Exceptional Children.
