About
Engineers Without Borders (EWB) is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to partner with developing communities to improve their quality of life through the implementation of environmentally sustainable, equitable, and economical engineering projects”. Its projects are driven by engineering students and engineering professionals who are excited to participate in the global community and contribute in meaningful and long lasting ways to the developing world. The host community works side by side with members of EWB on the projects which they themselves initiate. Projects include building potable water systems, sustainable energy systems and road improvements.
The Bradley University chapter was established this year and already our membership base is strong, with 15 members signed up and ready to work on a project. They represent freshman through senior engineering students in the electrical, mechanical, construction, accounting, marketing, and nursing faculties. Everyone involved has a strong passion for helping others improve their communities by sharing the engineering skills they are working to acquire. This organization has been well received on campus and is quickly becoming recognized as a significant way to make a difference.
A new professional chapter has also been established in Peoria through the initiative of Matt Zick, a civil engineer with Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc. The members have offered their time and expertise to mentor and assist the Bradley University chapter once our project gets off the ground. In addition, members of the Bradley University engineering faculty have offered their time to help with and advise our student chapter including Dr. Ahmad Fakheri, a mechanical engineering professor, and Dr. Robert Fuessle, a civil engineering professor.
Each chapter is required to raise funds to carry out its own project. Estimated project costs are anywhere from $15,000 to $30,000 and include travel and living expenses for the team, as well as any materials needed. A Technical Advisory Committee reviews the technical, cultural and health aspects of a project before a chapter travels to the site in order to provide quality control on EWB-USA projects.
