Minutes: Summarized and approved.
Notes:
- It was anticipated that tonight's meeting would take the full amount of our allotted time, so the recommendation was made for David to present his sci-fi news first. [His comments are recorded below under the usual heading.]
- Carl burps at the request for a pizza order.
- Gordo arrives at 10:15:06 with pizza. His arrival prompts a general "Gordo!" from the room.
- People bring chairs back to the room at 10:23. Ryan says, "They've been in the room, so now they're members!"
- The concluded minutes receive applause. The motion to have the last line reread is made and approved.
Committee Reports:
Recruitment and Relations Committee:
Quiz Bowl Committee:
- The tournament was on Saturday, April 20. The winning team was STAB, for "Smarter Than the Average Bear.", which beat the SAE team. This made Anti-Joel happy.
- The STAB guys were "our former/supposed archrivals" the last time Psi Phi entered a team, and they were mad that they didn't get a chance for a rematch against Psi Phi this year; this also made Anti-Joel happy.
T-Shirt Committee:
- "We're wearing shirts. RAHRR!"
Movie Committee:
- The movie for this week has been scrapped.
- Fahrenheit 451 is running on AMC right now, and will probably be shown again later this week. cj is home watching it, so he sent the book as proxy him.
Bryce's Basement Committee:
- The U-Hall basement has been procured to use for the party on May 7-8.
- A TV and DVD player will be available. We still need DVD connecting cables.
- A pizza/drinks order for the party is being passed around.
No Report Committee:
- Ryan gives a report on the Smackdown taping held in Peoria last night, which several members attended. His quote of the night came from Kurt Angle, who said that "Peoria sounds more like the name of a urinary infection than a city!"
- Ryan also noted that Kurt Angle's pyro "made Kenny jump a foot out of his seat." {Really, Ryan, it was only about nine inches or so...}
- Finally, while watching one of the women's matches, Ryan realized that his new lifelong dream was to become a wrestling referee.
- No report.
Officers' Reports:
Communications Officer:
- The minutes are up.
- The Comm Officer would like three things to be generally known: first, that it is his birthday; second, that it is his twenty-first birthday; and third, that it is Secretary's Day. {Boy, am I on fire tonight...}
- The Comm Officer also officially announces that he is retiring from the secretary's position, and that before the beginning of the fall semester, he hopes to have completed a manual detailing the demands and procedures of his job, to be used by his successors.
- In STCCG news, Ryan reports that some of the new expansion boxes have been opened and found to contain no rares! He then compares this lamentable possibility with that of the Raw Deal CCG, which features a "hot pack," or an all-ultrarare pack, once every six boxes.
Constable:
- The chapter meeting for Theti Xi has been moved, so for the first time in a long while, Carl can come all of the end-of -the-semester party! Applause ensues.
- Everything's under control.
Grand Nagus:
- The current balance is $306.08, by assumption.
- The amazon.com money has not yet come in.
- Kenny is given a quarter, which he gratefully accepts.
Chief of Operations:
First Officer:
- "Give a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."
Captain:
- I say "Mail's here," you sing "Letters!" "Mail's here!" "Letters!" "Mail's here!" "Letters!"
- Mail:
- Propaganda from the Peoria Chiefs for Thirsty Thursday
Old Business:
- The convention this Saturday might be a bust. David is still able to go, but something has come up for everybody else, so David may be on his own.
New Business:
- Nominations for officers fornext semester will now commence.
- Lyz nominates herself for captain.
- Landon nominates Bryce for first officer.
- Carl nominates himself for constable, and all imcumbent officers for their respective offices. The First Officer and the Comm Officer respectfully decline their respective nominations.
- Bryce nominates Ryan for nagus.
- Ryan nominates himself for captain.
- Kenny nominates Bryce for comm officer.
- Carl nominates Gordo for nagus.
- David nominates Aaron for nagus.
- Kenny nominates himself for first officer, "because I want a job where I don't have to do anything for a change!"
- cj nominates the flamingo for comm officer and constable by proxy. Carl seconds him, but is overruled.
- Bryce inquires, "Who put 'puke' on the drinks?" (Naturally, it was Gordo.)
- Landon nominates himself for all offices except captain and chief of operations.
- Lyz nominates Ryan for constable.
- Ryan nominates himself for chief.
- Carl nominates David for comm officer, but David politely declines the nomination.
- Nominations are now closed. {But, knowing us, we'll probably reopen them next week...}
- The party will start at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 7, in the U-Hall basement. Elections will take place at during the meeting at midnight on Wednesday, May 8.
- Bryce will be letting people into U-Hall via the entrance near Constance, unless construction has closed it.
- Lyz commments as an aside that Constance was very noisy today.
Scifi News:
- Here begins David's aforementioned sci-fi news.
- Blade 3 is in development. David Goyer, the writer from Blade 2, has been hired to write it.
- A sequel to the remake of Planet of the Apes is not likely, however.
- A new incarnation of the Twilight Zone is coming to UPN. The pilot will be directed by Jonathan Frakes, and hosted by Forest Whitaker.
- Due out in October is the 96-page trade paperback "Star Charts: The Complete Atlas of Star Trek," written and illustrated by Geoffrey Mandel.
- There will be two new episodes of Enterprise on study day, May 8, from 7 to 9 pm on UPN.
- The nominations for the MTV Movie Awards have been announced. Here are some of the highlights:
- The Fellowship of the Ring got 6: Best Movie, Best Male Performance (Elijah Wood), Best Villain (Christopher Lee), Breakthrough Male (Orlando Bloom), Best Action Sequence (cave-tomb battle), and Best Fight (Lee v. Ian McKellen).
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider got 2: Best Female Performance (Angelina Jolie) and Best Fight (Jolie v. the robot).

- The One got one {insert joke here} for Best Fight (Jet Li v. Jet Li).
- David has a copy of ST: Stargazer: Book Two: Progenitor, by Michael Jan Friedman. The book is due out later this month.
- The rest of this report concerns random sci-fi news.
- Kenny reports that Pentium 4 commercials have been using a snippet of "Fly Me to the Moon," as sung by {I think} Frank Sinatra.
- Also, Kenny reports on this past Sunday's excellent Futurama episode, which featured a cameo appearance by Jonathan Frakes, as well as longer appearances by Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, and George Takei.
- The episode was titled "Where No Fan Has Gone Before," and included a semi-omnipotent, bad-tempered alien named Melllvar.
- David says he will bring the episode to the party for the benefit of all who missed it on Sunday.
- cj says (by proxy) that a preview of the soundtrack for Attack of the Clones is now available at starwars.sonyclassical.com.
- Bryce has this week's issue of Newsweek, which contains an article on the latest and upcoming Star Wars movies titled "The Empire Bounces Back."
- The gist of the article was that the first movie sucked, but the second one should be better. The top two reasons it gave for the crappiness of the first movie were the following: first, Jar Jar; and second, "the kid."
- Ryan says that on May 6, VH1 will air its One-Hit Wonders special, hosted by William Shatner, naturally.
- Ryan also notes, as movie business news, that Linda "Deep Throat" Lovelace died this week.
- The Comm Officer thanks everyone for a smoothly-run meeting, leaving us with time to waste this week.
- The Captain writes a birthday message for the Comm Officer on the whiteboard.
- The Captain also recommends the book Moral Politics by George Lakoff to the club.
- Finally, Anti-Joel gives a war report. 3.5 people were involved in the war this week. Initially, Japan (Kenny) expanded the Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, but was halted when China (Gordo) reclaimed its homeland. Russia (Bryce) successfully subverted the Turks.
- There will be more warring on study day.
- Laura waltzes in at 10:52:36 pm.
Adjournment: 10:52:40 (apotheosis)(yeti)(oh, dear God)pm
