Notes:
- Marisa has a sticking point.
Committee Reports:
Recruitment and Relations Committee:
- The Psi Phi flyers were not completed in time for inclusion in the freshman binder. Oh, well. (They'd have bankrupted us anyway.)
- However, we still have a table at the Activities Fair on Monday, August 26 (the Monday before classes). Anyone who wants to help, come on by the booth!
T-Shirt Committee:
- Lots of people are wearing the t-shirts.
Movie Committee:
- In order to have a more active Movie Committee next semester, it is suggested that we try to procure a room (such as Neumiller or Baker B51) in which to hold regular movie viewings.
- It is also asked if there is any interest to sending an away team to go see a midnight showing of Star Wars Episode II on the last day of finals. Twelve people seem interested, so a sign-up sheet is passed around.
Bryce's Basement Committee:
- The movies/videos we'll be watching tonight are the following:
- WWF "Evening Gown" match (before everybody gets here)
- Alien
- Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
- The season finale of Futurama
- The Wizard of Oz, with the soundtrack of Antichrist Superstar
- The motion to disband the committee is made and passed.
No Report Committee:
- Julie and Landon and Gordo and Lyz entertain us all with some crazy talk. They receive applause.
- No report.
Officers' Reports:
Communications Officer:
- Last week's minutes are up.
Constable:
- Our constable is here tonight! He receives applause.
- [Item deleted from minutes for security reasons.]
- The last report from our outgoing Constable consists of two parts. First, this week's quote from Dr. Jones: "Bring an artillery sheel in. Shell's this big; size of a Volkswagen."
- Second, Julie and Chris K. do the "boom-shaka-laka-laka" dance! They receive (standing applause)x2!
- Everything's under control.
Grand Nagus:
- The current balance is around $285, after subtracting $48.18 for pizzas and around $58 for food.
- The outgoing Nagus wants Gordo to be his successor, to simplify things.
- "No! I'm Mussolini!" --SQUISH! {Don't ask...}
Chief of Operations:
- The production info and plot description of the season finale of Enterprise is up on the site, with some spoilers. The finale will air in two weeks at 7 here in Peoria, and at 8 Eastern and Pacific.
First Officer:
- The First Officer regales us with the tale of a funny nonevent, faithfully paraphased as follows:
- The other day, people were photographing the people in chem lab, and Bryce was asked to give his signature. He signed himself "Bryce E. Callighan," and, when asked what the "E" stood for, he responded, "Intrigue." When queried further, he replied, "It's part of the mystique."
- This story earns the First Officer buckets and bags of crunchy applause.
Captain:
- The Captain didn't get the mail today.
Old Business:
- Marisa forgot the catalog.
New Business:
- Kenny and Ryan went to go see the air show, which featured the Blue Angels.
- Something about using Bradley email over the summer is heatedly discussed. {Hey, August is still summer!}
Scifi News:
- Spider-Man topped the box office this weekend. It grossed $114 million, which is the highest weekend take ever, beating out the $89 million achieved by Harry Potter.
- A sequel to Independence Day has been greenlighted, as well as Mission Impossible 3.
- Chris K. comments that all these sequels are "the *real* attack of the clones!"
- James Doohan is at home recovering from a recent illness, and things are looking good.
- David shows us what he got on Free Comic Book (Singular) Day. It's a copy "Star Wars Tales," the prequel to Episode II.
- Due out next week is Strange New Worlds V, the collection of Trek stories written by fans. This version contains a few stories from Enterprise!
- The soundtrack to Episode II is out, with spoilers in the liner notes.
- This week's TV Guide is featuring Dinotopia, the "mega-miniseries" due out soon on ABC.
- David also has the special edition TV Guide for the 35th anniversary of Star Trek. There are three different covers, each featuring shiny foil and a different combination of three Star Trek captains.
- Anti-Joel points out, regarding the captains on the covers, "If you hate Kirk, you're screwed!"
- Also, each version contains a cool pullout poster, which has pictures of all the ships from the series on one side, and the 35 covers from the collector's set of Star Trek TV Guides on the other.
- David has the novelization of Star Wars Episode II, written by R.A. Salvatore, which is available now.
- Lyz took a bassoon lesson in Iowa City, and saw a flyer for a music convention with a Lord of the Rings theme: "Enter, friend, and listen."
- Apparently, there will be a convention for fans of the show "You Can't Do That on Television" soon.
- Julie reports that Sullivan's has holo-covers of Anakin.
Elections:
- This semester, we're going to have elections by secret *written* ballot, to make things easier on the Comm Officer. {Note: things were not made easier.}
- Kenny and Chris K., as incumbents whose choose not to seek re-election, form the Vote Arbitration Board, in that they arbitrarily get to decide who everybody voted for.
- Voting for First Officer is tabled till the start of next semester.
- Three offices are decided by a majority: Lyz is Captain, David is Chief of Operations, and Bryce is Communications Officer. After counting second votes, Gordo is elected Nagus.
- A runoff election between Carl, Landon, and Ryan for Constable is necessary. Landon wins the runoff, and hence will be Constable next semester.
- Landon announces that his tenure as constable will be distinguished by benevolent fascism and lots of flaming male nudity.
- We forgot to bap David during his three seconds of being bappable, but we didn't have the bapper with us anyway, so it looks like David gets off scot-free again.
- The Captain leaves the meeting, initially putting Gordo in charge, but technically, since we haven't elected the new First Officer yet, the honor goes to Bryce.
