Things to Know Before You Go

Registration and Fee
After receiving your letter from the Illinois State Library, admitting you to the Institute, please register online. Enter personal information carefully as we will use it in rosters, nametags, and other Institute materials.

The $50 registration fee is due by May 1 and should be paid by credit card or check, payable to Bradley University. You may pay the fee when you register, or you may choose to be invoiced. Mail checks to:
Wanda Lane
Continuing Education
Bradley University
1501 W. Bradley Avenue
Peoria, IL 61625

Transportation During the Institute
You will need no transportation during your week on campus. You will be walking to and from sessions and the residence hall. Numerous restaurants, coffee shops, a drugstore, and a small grocery are located near campus.

CEUs
Every person who attends the Institute and participates in all of the activities will earn between 30-35 contact hours of continuing education units (CEUs) through Bradley University.

Business Cards
Institute attendees will each receive new, personalized business cards. The information you enter when you register for the Institute will be used to produce your business cards, so please be accurate when you enter information. You will have an opportunity to preview your business cards and make changes by May 1, 2008. For more information, contact Wanda Lane, Continuing Education, 309.677.2523 or wanda@bradley.edu

Residence Hall Life
Your home during the Institute is Elmwood Residence Hall, one of the three halls of the Singles Complex, offering air conditioned private rooms. Institute participants and planning team members will be the only guests staying in Elmwood. Please note that Elmwood has no elevators.

Male and female participants will have separate bathrooms located on each of the three floors. You will be provided with bed linens, including blankets and pillows, as well as towels and wash cloths. The restrooms offer private showers and toilets.

Your residence hall key will be issued to you when you arrive. The key will open your room, the door to the stairs, and the entrance to the building. For your safety, the main entrances to Elmwood Hall are locked at night; therefore, you must use your key to enter the building after hours.

Decisions, Decisions: What to Pack, What to Wear?
Comfortable and casual! We are on a university campus during the summer, so shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes or sandals are very appropriate. If you are hoping to participate in the morning walks, bring your walking attire and shoes. You may wish to dress in layers, or bring a sweatshirt or sweater in case the air conditioning feels too cool.

If you forget something, don't worry. A drugstore is located in Campus Town shopping center, within easy walking distance.

Packing Suggestions--What to Bring

  • Pen and notebook for notes. A tote bag will be provided.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • Additional towels and wash cloths, if you wish. The provided linens are small.
  • Personal toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) and a container to transport all your “stuff” to the bathroom.
  • Robe and slippers or flip flops for trips to the bathroom.
  • Alarm clock or clock radio.
  • A fan, if you wish your air conditioned room to be cooler.
  • Hangers, as the room will not have them.

Friday Celebration Luncheon
The final luncheon will be held at 11:45 on Friday in the Michel Student Center on campus. You will have already checked out of the residence hall prior to your morning classes, so you will go to the luncheon directly from your last a.m. class on Friday. Don't forget that the casual outfit you wear on Friday will be your traveling home clothes.

On Friday, Illinois State Library Director, Anne Craig, will join us, along with a number of other guests.

Telephone Numbers
Each residence hall room will have a telephone. You will be able to receive calls from home, but you will need to call collect, or use a calling card, for long distance calls.

Emergencies
In the case of an emergency during office hours, you can ask family or friends to call Continuing Education between 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 309.677.2523 . A staff member will immediately deliver the message to you.

In the case of an emergency during evenings and weekends, you can ask family or friends to call the Bradley University Police, 309.677.2000. Be sure to tell the operator that the person you are trying to contact is participating in the Institute for School and Public Librarians. An operator is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You can reach staff at the Illinois State Library through Friday, June 6. If something should happen on Saturday (June 7) or even while driving to Bradley on Sunday (June 8), please call Meg Frazier at 309.677.3219.

Check Out
Please check out of the residence hall, and turn in your key by 8:00 a.m. on Friday, preferably before you go to breakfast. Contact a Team member if you need to store your suitcase until your ride arrives. If someone is picking you up on Friday, he/she can meet you at Elmwood Hall after 1:30 p.m.

Remember - if you have any questions, we are only a phone call or email away. See you at Bradley on June 8!
