London Trip

Instructors

Dan Getz, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies, has taught Bradley University courses in London since 1999. With a Ph.D. in Chinese Buddhism from Yale University and 14 years of experience teaching Asian religions at Bradley University, Dan is uniquely qualified to lead the group on an exploration of sacred spaces in London. He has adapted many of his credit courses for ILR members over the last several years, and he is looking forward to offering this great learning opportunity in London to mature learners. Visiting the Swaminarayan Mandir (Hindu Temple) will be one of the most interesting sacred spaces the group will visit.

Having spent so much time in London, Dan has developed personal relationships in the community of London's Eastern religions. Those relationships have been key to the enriching experiences that Dan has been able to offer his students because many of the sites are not available to just anyone. Your experience will be much richer as a result of those cultivated relationships.

Why study Eastern religions in London?

  • London offers an extensive variety of religions in a close area.
  • Travelers will not experience the usual language barriers.
  • Dan Getz will give you an insider's look at London's sacred spaces.

James Ludwig, Associate Dean – Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts, Associate Professor of Theatre Arts, has been at Bradley University since 1968. Jim has taught 26 arts, music, and theatre appreciation courses in London since 1989, thus accomplishing his goal of spending a year in London – two weeks at a time. He has become very familiar with the wide variety of performance opportunities in London ranging from the Royal National Theatre, through the theatres in the West End, and the non-traditional “fringe” theatre.

Jim teaches classes at Bradley University in theatre education and theatre appreciation, and he has adapted many of his courses for the Institute for Learning in Retirement. His lengthy career in scene design – over 100 projects – and technical theatre will be a tremendous asset to learning about London's theatre scene.

Prior to visiting the various theatres and productions, Jim will enhance your experience with his enlightening pre-show talks, backstage tours, and little-known production information. You will have the total performance experience. With Jim Ludwig leading the way, you can count on a true “behind the scenes” look at London theatre!

Not only is Jim an expert on theatre, he is also devoted to the study of Sherlock Holmes, swans, sundials, the history of Europe in the 1940's, and the measurements of time and space that led to calculations for longitude. Join Jim for one of the dinner groups and you may entice him to talk about other equally interesting topics.

Bradley faculty members and staff will be in London to add expertise and excitement to the experiences, including British Library expert Peggy Carter, Bloomsbury Writers aficionado Christine Blouch, and staff from Continuing Education including Janet Lange, Sue Manley, and Jon Neidy. To enrich the experience, travelers will occasionally meet with a contingent of Bradley students, who will be eager to meet the group and share an occasional social event – perhaps tea, perhaps a pint.
