![]() Brainteasers Here's a sampling of the kinds of math questions you might encounter in the Summer Math Program for Children: Draw 8 shapes using these directions: Make 1/2 of the shapes circles. Make 1/4 into squares and 1/4 into triangles. Explain your strategy for solving this question. How many seeds do you think are in a watermelon? Do you think there are more or less than 100? Let's open one up and find out! We'll estimate, measure, do one-to-one comparisons – and snack! To get ready for 1st grade, we'll have fun taking surveys and discovering how to organize data onto different kinds of graphs, even a human graph. After working with calendars and celebrating our birthdays, we'll create a timeline for a special hermit crab. Do you like shapes? What could you bring for our 3-D solid shape collection? Have you ever visualized numbers before? Did you know that you can build numbers? We'll be doing that too. Let's use real measurement tools to figure out what is longer, or what weighs more. Maybe you like to work with coins – great! Wait until we sort them, and play our trading game. Do you know which coins have a man with a wig? Let's design and create the inside of a new children's museum! What does candy have to do with graphs? Holy cow, I just ate a fraction! Let's use problem solving math to figure out the mystery of the math monster! Can you think of a job that does not use math? How many pennies does it take to sink a boat. Using an item as "it," can it be as tall as a skyscraper; can it roll; can I use it to make a shape, or will it break? Program Overview
