Certificate in Family Mediation

Agenda

Week One will focus on developing a background in family mediation: Illinois family law and training in the divorce process, family systems and therapy, parenting through divorce, child development, and the effect of divorce upon children. Participants will learn negotiation theory, how to screen for abuse, and how to identify types of cases: family, comprehensive, custody, and post-decree.

Week Two will be outcome-oriented, with instruction and practice in developing a Memo of Agreement, or M.O.A., and mediation skill-building, parenting plans, finances, and post-decree issues. Participants will read case studies, view videotapes, role play, and discuss the impact of culture and diversity in mediation. Instructors will emphasize ethics and standards as well as mediation techniques, writing agreements, and contracting.
