Certificate in Family Mediation
Common Questions About the Program
Q. Does a mediator need an office, or will space be provided at the courthouse?
A. The mediator does need to use private offices. If an office is needed, please let the court know.
Q. How will mediators be compensated—by the clients, or by the court?
A. The clients will compensate the mediator.
Q. May mediators set their own fees? Is there a cap on the fee?
A. Each mediator will set personal fees. There is no cap, but once the mediator's name is placed on the court list, the mediator's resume and fee scale must be provided to the courts.
Q. May a client choose a mediator?
A. The client will be given the name of the mediator who is next on the list, but each client may select from other mediators.
Q. Can a client use his or her attorney as a mediator?
A. No client may use his or her personal attorney or counselor as a mediator.
Q. How many cases will each mediator take per year?
A. Mediators may choose how many cases they mediate each year; however, one pro bono case must be offered annually by each mediator.
Q. Will this Family Mediation Certificate be valid in other states and other mediation settings?
A. Mediation is an unregulated profession at the state and national level. The Mediation Council of Illinois and the Association for Conflict Resolution provide lists of seasoned mediators on their websites. Bradley's Certificate in Family Mediation signifies that the certificate holder has a 40-hour experience in family and divorce mediation, allowing the holder to begin mediating family and divorce concerns and be listed as an approved Family Mediator for the 10th Judicial Circuit Court. Supervision for all mediators on the court rotation list is strongly encouraged. This basic certificate is valid for additional mediation settings.
Q. Is there any financial assistance for tuition costs?
A. Financial assistance is not available at this time.
