Winterim 2009 OLLI Study Groups
Join people of similar interests as we explore a familiar topic in the context of a weekly get-together. Study groups are in-depth learning experiences that encourage interactive participation by members. They are led by facilitators who establish group expectations and areas of study. As active, involved learners, members will do outside readings and make in-class presentations. Gain a new perspective, contribute to a fun discussion, and join like-minded peers in this new venue for learning and friend-making! Here's what the Winterim Study Groups will discuss. Click on a title to see a full description. The Dust Bowl, Steinbeck, and The Grapes of Wrath Creation Stories--Origin of the Universe
The Dust Bowl, Steinbeck, and The Grapes of Wrath We will read and discuss John Steinbeck's classic novel, The Grapes of Wrath, which was a bestseller in its day but considered extremely controversial and shocking. Along the way, we will investigate the causes of the Dust Bowl, its impact on people's lives, Steinbeck's involvement with the migrants, and his commitment to writing this Pulitzer Prize winning novel. For class preparation, expect to read 90 pages in the novel weekly and to participate in lively in-class discussion. Also, you will be encouraged to do outside research of your choosing beyond the weekly reading to develop a fuller understanding of the novel, the period, and the author. Required for class: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. (NF/NSG) Class size is limited to 24. Facilitator: Sandy Stemler is a retired English teacher and an OLLI member. The purpose of this study group is to investigate, but not evaluate, the different creation stories of people all over the world. We will not decide which is the true or correct story. We will not try to convince another of our understanding of creation. Our purpose is simply to broaden our knowledge of how people, over the centuries and over the Earth, have tried to answer the question we are still trying to answer. How did it all begin? Or, did it have a beginning? Maybe it just was. Each week, two of the participants will be the discussion leaders. The group will have been given a key reference and the two discussion leaders will be asked to delve more deeply into the subject, present their findings, and lead the discussion. The instructor will facilitate the group and learn along with the members. Come join us! Class size is limited to 12. Facilitator: Henry Rakoff is a retired chemistry professor, research chemist, and an OLLI member.
