ALUMS: Seminar for High School Students and Faculty

Becoming a leader is a developmental process, and as such we believe we must begin with our youth. The ALUMS program gives young people a head start.

ALUMS is a one-of-a-kind leadership program that has developed thousands of students since 1988. This highly interactive seminar is designed to teach high school students and faculty new skills in leading others, working in groups, managing conflict, and setting goals.

Self-assessment instruments are used in each module of the program. The assessments give students an understanding of individual strengths and help students recognize the value of individual differences. This learning gives participants new skills and builds their self esteem.

Program Design

This one-day seminar is designed for 21 participants—18 students in their junior year of high school and 3 faculty members. Each module has a short interactive lecture followed by a practice session, including:

• Brainstorming
• Individual goal setting
• Situational leadership game
• Small group collaboration and problem solving
• Small group videotaping/Group process review and discussion

• Identify, practice and improve leadership skills
• Increase understanding of leadership styles of self and others
• Develop measurable goals that can be achieved after the program
• Stimulate further personal growth and excellence in the practice of leadership
