Whether you manage a private or public company it is important to know how to read an annual report and understand financial statements.  It will improve your decision making.  You will be better equipped to monitor your progress, identify problem areas, and plan for future growth.  Ultimately, a better understanding of financial statements will lead to increased profits.

To be an effective manager, it is critical to be able to address the following questions:

What is the company’s current financial condition?
What is meant by earnings quality, and how can I assess earnings quality?
What are the business’s strengths and weaknesses?
How sustainable are current earnings?
What are the “drivers” of profitability?
Are earnings vulnerable to variability?
What are our future business prospects?
How much cash do we need on hand to fund growth?
Do we have the money to grow, or should we borrow?
Can we cover additional debt?
Do we possess the financial strength to overcome periods of poor profitability?
How much cushion do we have in earnings and cash flows to pay interest and principal?
How do we compare with our competitors, both domestically and globally?

Whether you seek the answers to these questions for your company, a supplier, a customer, or a business-partner, the answers can be found in financial analysis.

This course is designed to help the non-financial manager read and interpret a financial report.  When you leave the course, you will understand the reporting environment and how firms operate in that environment.  We will cover each component of the balance sheet, income statement, cash flow analysis, and we will discuss the major sections of an annual report.  You will also gain financial analysis experience.
