The rising cost of health care has become a perennial concern for both consumers and businesses.  Currently, the United States spends $8,160 per person on health care with this figure expected to rise to $13,000 per person by 2017.  In 2008, 16 percent of total economic output for the United States was devoted to health care and this is projected to rise to 25 percent of GDP in 2025.  These figures are the highest in the world.  In the first part of the presentation, the trends, sources and drivers of these costs will be examined.

Given the fears over rapidly increasing healthcare costs, the health care system has been the target of various reform attempts.  With the election of President Obama, healthcare reform has become a major focus of his administration.  The second portion of the presentation will examine the major characteristics of current health care reform proposals: covering the uninsured, ensuring access to health insurance for the chronically ill, controlling costs, increasing competition in the health insurance market and financing healthcare.  The outcome of health care reform will have major long-term effects on us as both consumers of health care and as employers who provide health care benefits.  This presentation will provide an in-depth examination of this critical and recurrent issue.
