ANNOUNCEMENTS H1N1 FLU CLINIC We will be receiving another 500 H1N1 flu vaccines later this week. We will be hosting another flu shot clinic this Friday November 20th from 8:30am to 12:30 pm in Health Services. This clinic is open to ANY STUDENT 24 years of age and younger. No appointment is necessary. THERE IS NO FEE. Again, we expect to receive a total of 6000 vaccines and will keep the student body updated as more vaccines become available. Any student 24 years of age and younger may begin calling the clinic tomorrow Wednesdsay Nov. 18th to make an appointment for the H1N1 vaccine should the be unable to make the Friday morning clinic. SWINE FLU UPDATE: Health Services is currently aware of 139 cases of Influenza Type A in the student body this flu season. We have also begun to see an increase in Influenza-like illness spreading through campus. We encourage everyone to continue to the the 3 C's to help keep themselves and others healthy this flu season. We will continue to keep you updated as the season progresses. Based on OSF St. Francis Hospital recommendations we will no longer be performing the rapid Influenza tests at Health Services. This recommendation was based on the inadequate sensitivity of the test. Influenza will be diagnosed on clinical assessment. We are currently out of seasonal flu vaccines. We expect our last shipment to come in the next two weeks. If you would like to put your name on the waiting list, please call 677-2700. User Policy
Bradley Health Services exists to provide primary health care for Bradley students. All continuing students are eligible to use the health services on a year-round basis so long as they remain enrolled at the Institution and pay the health fee.
Services
The Health Center is a fully operational physician's office on the campus of Bradley University. Most of the services provided are included in the student health fee including all visits to both health services and counseling, basic lab work, minor procedures, and the lending of equipment. Other, more extensive work-ups may be an additional expense. Please bring your insurance card to your appointment in the event it is needed.
Health Services provides primary medical service and referrals for students during the academic year, maintains student health records, and assists with claims on student insurance. "Primary medical service" is defined as that which diagnoses the problem and then treats common ailments, (e.g. colds, flu, urinary tract infections, minor injury). Health care maintenance or support programs prescribed by a family physician may also be performed (e.g. allergy injections, dietary monitoring). For more severe medical or health problems, referral is made to community services or hospitals. Services include the following:
- assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses and injuries
- evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries
- management of various chronic illnesses
- physical exams for non-paid positions or programs through Bradley University only
- men's and women's clinics which provide sexual health screening including pap smears, evaluation and treatment of menstrual disorders, breast exams, testicular exams, contraceptive prescriptions, pregnancy testing, and evaluation and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
- immunizations
- allergy injections (with instructions and serum from student's allergist)
- diagnostic laboratory testing
- EKG
- nebulizer treatments
- pulse oximetry
- IV therapy for re-hydration
- equipment to lend such as crutches and nebulizer machine
- limited physical therapy appointments provided for acute situations
- referral to community specialist and services as needed
- cooperation with student's primary care provider for continuity of medical care
- courier services to the two main hospitals in Peoria for lab specimens
Student Health ID Cards
Student Health ID Cards will be available next week either from your RA, or, if you live off campus at the health center. Below are some more details.
Why are we distributing these cards?
In the past we have had some difficulty in communication with local emergency rooms and prompt cares that students visit when the clinic is closed or for more serious issues. Our hope is that these cards help to alleviate some of these issues. These cards contain all the information that these sites would need to send the visit information back to our office so we can follow up appropriately.
In addition to this reason, these cards contain all the information that you as students need to know in case of contacting us including or day and afterhours phone numbers.
Finally, these cards allow you to include some of your own personal medical information in case an emergency arises in a classroom or elsewhere.
How should I fill out the card?
On the front of the card is a place to write you name. On the back of the card are three separate questions.
1) Preferred hospital in Peoria – this will be based on your health insurance. You can contact your insurance provider based on their phone number on your insurance card and ask which hospital in the Peoria area they prefer to use. This information is valuable to us in case we ever need to send out lab work or send you for a x-ray or other testing.
2) Hometown physician – this is included if you would like both your hometown physician as well as health services to be notified of your visit to the emergency room or prompt care.
3) Chronic illnesses – this information is helpful in case of an emergency. Diagnoses such as asthma, diabetes, or seizures can lead to circumstances where you may be unable to answer questions. These cards could talk for you. If you are not comfortable writing down a diagnosis, that’s OK, it’s completely voluntary.
What do I do with the card?
Please place the completed card with your student ID or other material that you keep with you at all times. If you do visit a prompt care or emergency room, please show the physician that sees you the card and ask that a copy of your visit be sent to health services.
Class Absence Policy
Students will not be given excuses for missing class. Students may sign a release of information for their professors and the professors may contact health services at their discretion if they have questions. Students diagnosed with more long-term illnesses that may require missing classes for an extended period of time may sign a release of information for the Center of Student Support Services to notify their professors.

Student Health and Immunization Requirement
For the protection of each Bradley student, it is required that a student health form be filed with Health Services before the student begins at the University. These forms are sent to each admitted student. If a form is not received, a copy may be obtained at Health Services in the Markin Center.
It is also a requirement of the College University Law, Public Act 85-1315, that all persons who are registering for the first time for more than one class on campus at a four year university after July 1, 1989, present evidence of immunity against immunizable diseases.
It is suggested that all students receive Hepatitis B immunizations, particularly those entering a health science, before starting class. Failure to comply with these immunization requirements will result in your being denied registration.
